I was looking at the instructions for these two settings and I'm wondering what the best method is to precisely identify and enforce the settings on the device? Initially, I thought about just using the device's IP address, but don't they change over time? If so, what will happen if I want this to be a set-and-forget setup? Are MAC addresses better? Although I did have trouble trying to enter that into the field.
They won't if you set the 'Reserved IP' (in GL.iNet parlance — Static (DHCP) Leases is a more common term) provided the client devices don't use a random MAC. You'd have to check ea. device/phone/whatever's settings for your SSID.
- GL GUI -> Clients -> (Online/Offline) Clients -> Reserved IP
- GL GUI -> Network -> LAN -> Address Reservation
Under Clients, I can see the individual MAC addresses. I noticed that all of my phones have little triangles with an exclamation mark. What does that mean and the implications in this context?
What's the best practice to identify the devices in Adguard Home? Use "Reserved IP" and then use that assigned address?
I want to do things the proper way and build upon it. I want to minimize complications.
LOL! There's your randomized MACs. Turn them off for that profile for your Wi-Fi SSID. Be sure to always use that same SSID if/when you reflash/reset so the client device's static leases will be restored.
It was enabled by default. I never set it. I wanna know more about it. When will I actually need to use it?
How? I only see it as a global setting.
Yeah, mobile devices set that as default as a security/privacy precaution when you're hitting unknown APs... think Joe's Cafe. For your home you'd want to turn that off to set static leases set properly.
I'm referring a per-client device profile. It should be easily found somewhere in your Pixel's Wi-Fi settings for the SSID of your AP.
I didn't set that on my mobile devices. The router has that on by default. Is this necessary in a home or office environment? If I bring the Beryl AX to a cruise ship, should I have BSSID on at all times?
I'm a newbie at this. I'm thinking you're referring to the router. I'm still confused about what is best practice.
A BSSID is different than the Wi-Fi's name (SSID). I would leave the BSSID as what ever is the default.
