Beryl AX: Resort Internet Only 2.4GHz and Repeat Disconnects

Hello!

Device: Beryl AX
Firmware: Tried 4.6.9 and the beta 4.7.0.
Issues:

  1. When I'm connected to the resort internet directly on my Android phone, I see that it is connecting using 5GHz. However after looking at the Beryl AX, it is only utilizing 2.4ghz.

  2. Repeat connectivity issues at varying frequency ranging from multiple times a minute to one time in a half hour. Looking at the logs, it is due to a DNS timeout finding the portal.

repeater[3121]: (repeater-portal.lua:298) detect portal fail: resolve "captive.apple.com" fail: recv from "8.8.8.8:53" fail: timeout

Any tips?

Edit: Should have included earlier I do not have repeater mode locked to 2.4ghz. I've tried both auto and 5ghz but it won't connect to 5ghz.

This log is notice, it is just used to detect whether the repeater's WiFi requires portal login, not the key log which the router cannot connect to resort WiFi.

  1. Does this resort WiFi require portal login?
  2. Can send the syslog to me via PM
  3. Please can try the op24 firmware for the MT3000:
    GL.iNet download center

Bruce, resort does require a portal that needs my name, room number, and email. Unfortunately, and I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I can't figure out how to send you the file directly.

I did downgrade to the firmware you requested and there was no change. It's possible that the WiFi for the resort is shotty but I seem to have less issues when directly connected.

I upgraded your account, you can send @bruce PMs now.

Thanks Admon! I sent the file to Bruce. Unfortunately today is checkout day so I won't be able to perform any further troubleshooting steps to verify, but maybe something will jump out!

Thanks to provide the syslog.

I found the syslog shows the Q1, which only relays to the resort via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, it does not show Q2 which repeater is disconnected occasionally.

Let us check the Q1 issue first.

Update:
For the Q1 issue, the syslog did not show the repeater process to connect to 5G WIFI, we would like to further info:

  1. execute in the SSH:
    iwinfo
    iwinfo rax0 scan

  2. Lock 5G in repeater, try to connect to resort WIFI, and export syslog

Am I the only one that reads this post, sees the problem immediately (most likely), and then gets thoroughly confused by the questions from support?

Your error message shows that it's failing to get a response to Google DNS #2 DNS server located at IP address 8.8.8.8. That's probably because the resort was blocking access to that DNS. This is super super common nowadays with captive portal systems at resorts, air travel and more. They block access to some DNS's while not blocking all, usually you can find one that works fine (eg. Cloud9, etc) to swap to.

Or maybe I'm just misreading this,.

  1. Error on 8.8.8.8 timeout
  2. If you can't resolve DNS, you can't go anywhere unless you know IP addresses
  3. Fix the DNS and you fix the internet.

I realize it's past your checkout date so it's a moot point, but this got way overcomplicated. The solution was and still is to set a different DNS.

Thank you for your advice for Q2 issue.
I was checking the Q1 issue about the router cannot repeat to connect 5GHz WiFi.
