Morning all, with being new to this forum, may I apologise beforehand for my lack of knowledge regarding hardware/software terminology, I will try and put my problem across as clear as possible.
I have bought a brume 3 router to place between my primary router and my android box with my pia vpn subscription activated on the brume 3. I assumed (wrongly) that I just put my ethernet cable into wan port and Android box into lan port and that would be it ! ….. wrong !!, after about 20m later the tv screen went black and this is where my problem arises. Can i set up my brume 3 to just protect my android box only , with my vpn active ?. Hope this sounds clear enough and thanks to all who read this
thank you.
Hi,
Your current wiring idea is correct, and Brume 3 can be used as a dedicated VPN router for the Android Box.
The expected network topology should be:
Internet
|
Main Router
LAN port
|
WAN port
Brume 3
LAN port
|
Android Box
|
TV / Streaming App
Please keep Brume 3 in Router Mode.
On Brume 3, go to VPN, log in with your PIA account, select a server, and start the VPN connection.
For the black screen issue after around 20 minutes, could you please confirm what exactly happens?
- Does the TV show “No Signal”, as if the HDMI signal from the Android Box is lost?
- Is only the streaming or IPTV app showing a black screen, while the Android Box interface still works?
- Does the Android Box lose internet access or the PIA VPN as disconnected when this happens?
- If you temporarily turn off the PIA VPN on Brume 3, does the black screen still happen?
If you don’t mind, could you please let us know the main reason you need to use VPN on the Android Box?

Hi charles2
Thanks for your prompt reply, much appreciated. In reference to your 4 points.
1
No it doesn't show nothing , just black screen.
2
Yes, it is the app showing black screen, and the Android interface is still working.
3
Can’t tell if either is lost due to black screen.

Just black screen when vpn on or off
The reason I'm wanting a vpn before android box is the tv is buffering and freezing . On forums I've been on, the general consensus is that my bandwidth is being “throttled” and a vpn would correct/cure this…… hopefully
Hi,
Regarding the VPN, a VPN may help if your ISP is throttling that specific streaming traffic.
However, if the issue is caused by the app, the stream source or local network quality, using a VPN may not solve it and may sometimes make the connection slower.
Based on your answers, it may not be directly caused by the PIA VPN connection.
Could you please remove Brume3 from the connection and connect the Android Box directly to your main router for testing?
Please use the same app and the same channel or video, and test for about 30 minutes.
If the black screen still happens without Brume3, please check the app itself, the streaming/IPTV source, or the main home network.
If the black screen does not happen after removing Brume3, could you please let us know whether any other features are enabled on the Brume3?
For example, AdGuard Home, Content Filter, Parental Control, custom DNS.
