Customise (Keep Settings) Script

Is there a way to modify the script which determines what gets kept in an update?

I’d prefer to install it clean but there are usually some things I’d like to keep (such as Openvpn config) that I’d prefer to retain.

You can check things in /lib/upgrade/keep.d/

These files list which file or folder will be kept when upgrade. So you can remove what you do not need and upgrade with keeping settings.

You are checking that folder via SSH correct? They are system files, not URL’s.

Sorry, that was careless of me on two counts.
1, I meant the directory does not exist
and
2. I checked the wrong thing!
