Flint 2 Low upload speed

This isn't the first discussion I've read about Flint 2, but I've never found a real solution to this problem. I'm currently using version v4.9.0-op24, but I've also tried the "stock" versions and the problem was the same. The Ethernet connection is excellent, about 2.2Gbps download and 1Gbps upload. However, using Wi-Fi, with the latest-generation devices and 10cm from the router, I can reach a maximum of 1900Mbps download but only 500Mbps upload, exactly half. The problem is only with uploads; the Wi-Fi coverage is excellent. Does anyone have a solution?

Since the wired upload speed can reach approximately 1 Gbps, could you please perform a local network test to help determine whether the reduced upload speed occurs on the Wi-Fi connection itself or in the Wi-Fi-to-WAN forwarding path?

Could you tell me the procedure? I tried searching online, but they say the ONT might block this.

Openspeedtest in Wifi.. (Hardware acceleration is enabled, I already tried to enable/disable it, use software acceleration or automatic and it doesn't change the upload)

I tried to install the package SQM on LuCi, the problem is partially solved and I can reach around 850/900 Mbps in upload, however the download instead of remaining at 1.8 Gbps drops to 1.1 Gbps, so it is not a "real" solution... how can I have both performing at their maximum?

Based on the local OpenSpeedTest result, the Wi-Fi uplink itself appears to be working normally, so the reduced Internet upload speed is more likely occurring somewhere in the Wi-Fi-to-WAN forwarding path or between the Flint 2’s WAN and the upstream device.

Regarding SQM, it can improve the upload speed by controlling traffic queues and smoothing the traffic sent through the connection. However, SQM also adds additional packet processing and disables Network Acceleration, so on a high-speed connection it may reduce the maximum forwarding performance.

If convenient, could you please temporarily disable SQM and test the Flint 2 with a 1 Gbps Ethernet link to the upstream modem/ONT? This comparison should help us verify whether the reduced upload speed is related to the current 2.5G WAN connection.

Hi, I don't think the ONT has anything to do with it, with another router the upload reached 1 Gbps quietly with 1.8Gbps in download... also the openspeed result is strange, in the same location, same device, 1 minute later I tried with speedtest and this is what it shows..as I said it doesn't go beyond 500/550 Mbps, really strange thing. Isn't there a "simple" solution to solve this thing? It's the first time that a router has limited the upload in this way...

What has ethtool got to do with WiFi? He said it's fine wired but slow uploading using WiFi.

I don’t know but on my Flint 2 the upload speed is capped to ~500ish mbps when flow control is disabled on both stock op21 and vanilla OpenWrt 25.12, I guess it’s a hardware thing as my ONT also has a 2.5gbps port

I had the initial 500mbit upload cap initially but for me I think it was because hardware acceleration was not enabled from memory however even with it enabled WiFi speeds still struggle with the Flint 2, I'm on a 2gbit symmetrical line and this router struggles with WiFi speeds compared to the Asus BQ 16 I replaced it with.

Most of the time I can barely get half my speed on WiFi with this router even very close to it, It's not a great router if you want consistent high WiFi speeds if you have a fast line.

Thank you for the additional information.

The op24 firmware uses a different Wi-Fi driver stack compared with the standard GL.iNet firmware, so Wi-Fi behavior and performance may vary between these firmware versions.

To help us determine whether the behavior is related to the firmware/driver difference, could you please try testing with the standard v4.9.1 firmware without keeping the previous configuration?

After the firmware installation, please only configure the settings necessary for the Internet connection and Wi-Fi first, without enabling SQM, VPN, or other additional features, and then perform the following three tests.

  1. Please connect the test device to the Flint 2 via Wi-Fi and perform a normal Internet speed test, as you did previously.
  2. Please install OpenSpeedTest on the Flint 2 again and access the local OpenSpeedTest page from the Wi-Fi client.
  3. For this test, please SSH into the Flint 2 and run the following commands to install the Ookla Speedtest CLI and test.

tar -xvzf ookla-speedtest-1.2.0-linux-aarch64.tgz
chmod +x speedtest

After installation, we recommend listing the available Speedtest servers:

./speedtest -L

Please select a nearby and stable server from the list, and then run the test using its Server ID:

./speedtest -s <Server_ID>

After the three tests are completed, please share the approximate download and upload results with us, and we will compare the three traffic paths further.

Sorry for the late reply, thank you for the additional testing and information you have provided.

Based on the current results, could you please check the router's actual operating state when the lower Wi-Fi upload speed occurs.

  1. Could you please confirm whether the Flint 2 is currently connected to the Internet via DHCP or PPPoE ?
  2. During the speed test, are there any other devices or services on the network continuously using the Internet upload bandwidth, such as cloud cameras, NAS cloud backup, file synchronization?
    If convenient, could you temporarily disconnect the other clients and keep only the Wi-Fi device used for the speed test, then check whether the upload result changes significantly?
  3. Could you please also check the Flint 2 CPU load while performing the Wi-Fi Internet speed test. You can SSH into the router, run top , and observe the CPU usage during the test, while the upload speed is being measured.
