Flint 2: Why is 4.8.4 (op21) update suggested over 4.8.3 (op24)?

Hi, I have a Flint 2 running version 4.8.3 op24. Now when I access the router, it suggests updating to version 4.8.4 stable.
Is this version based on op21?
If so, why is this update being suggested when I already have a version based on op24?

Also, what improvements does this update bring?
And if I decide to update, I won’t be able to keep any of my configuration, correct?

I have done manual upgrades across op24 and vanilla gl versions preserving settings and it works.

Also facing the same issue where 4.8.4 is being suggested for update over the op24 4.8.3 version.

Hi,

I have GL-MT6000 v4.8.3-op24.

I want to try v4.8.5 Beta and v4.8.4 stable.

I make a backup via LuCI - it comes out as a large backup.gz file (about 110 MB), which cannot be opened.

When I previously made a backup in v4.8.3 Stable, it came out as a file about 60 KB, which could be opened.

How can I make a backup in v4.8.3-op24 so that it can be restored in other versions?

I would consider an autoupdater offering upgrades across different branches of the firmware a pretty serious bug.

I noticed this as well.

The release notes just state “mainly a fix for some known bugs”

really…. what is this update…. I was in op24, I didn't login in the router since weeks, now I access and see an update, apply it without thinking much…. it's now on op21…. seriously??? I'll just flash stock owrt 25, really this is too bad…

Unfortunately, I knew someone would be misled by it and would update without thinking too much.

I admit that I almost did it myself, but I hesitated because with every update something kept breaking.

So can you confirm that you updated, and even though you’ve now gone back to op21, everything is working and nothing broke?

I’m also undecided about switching to op25 vanilla, but I’m waiting for them to fix a few bugs before doing it.

yes that's what I did, my mistake, I always think twice but this time I tought Yeah it's since weeks I don't check let's go for it change log is just fixes how can be bad update… somehow everything is working fine, but my config is super simple just adguard and WiFi, nothing else, and tmr will just wipe it for vanilla owrt

Hi,

Is it worth upgrading from 4.8.3 op24 to 4.8.4?

no, don't, you will be rolled back to open wrt 21

Hmm I did not know about this, but if it is true what I read here that a OP24 firmware requests a MTK SDK version on 21, then this is terrible wrong even in a auto update setting.

It doesn't mather here when a rollback safely happened, they really need to be abstracted into two distinct completely different flavours with their own separated update channels or very ugly things could happen, this is also the reason why OpenWrt doesn't support help for other forks and offshoots they should belong to other maintain and update channels.

I have seen what happens if a configuration corruption of dnsmasq happens, no dhcp, i dont think the dhcp differ much but wifi absolutely will.

The problem is the release is targeted on the gl sdk which is purely the ui and vpn functions, and on the mtk sdk and qsdk it is higher maintained than the OP24 build, but op24 should not follow mtk sdk release.

@bruce is there not a way to have a extra check between such images on the gl sdk part ?

I mean if there once gets a situation there are differences in partitions in a new future device, the user may get a error shown but they may just click upgrade which then makes the router cold bricked, i don't like this idea, the abstraction is really needed.

This is odd. I’m running 4.8.3 (op24) and don’t get any suggestion to upgrade. In the GUI’s Upgrade panel it says “Firmware is up-to-date”.

A month or two ago developers requested I load specially patched firmware to aid in debugging a problem, so that Upgrade panel also shows Firmware Type as “debug”. Is this why I’m not seeing (the definitely unwanted) suggestion to move to 4.4 (op21)?

Yes because you have a debug version, you’ll have to update manually.

Good! I don’t want any automatic updates under any circumstances.

They fixed the bug that was showing the update to everyone, regardless of the version already installed on their router.

It’s a shame that in just three days this issue caused quite a few headaches for less attentive users, who updated instinctively.

But seriously, how is it possible that after months and months they release an update and every single time there’s something that doesn’t work?

Avoid this release. It has an issue with DNS (DoH) and the WiFi signal takes a significant hit. I now no longer get WiFi in one room in my house where I did previously.

This issue seems a bit odd. We'll check the OTA server.

Sorry — if there is indeed an issue with the OTA server, we will fix it to prevent incorrect firmware pushes in the next release.

Hi all,

I have 4.8.3 and op21. How can this happen and how do I bring it up to op24?

download from gl.inet fw you want and install it via router.

well technically speaking in this case, op24 and op21 versions are equivalent in terms of features The op24 version by glint is not a straight upgrade for op21 (both are version 4.8.x)
