Flint 3 guest DNS issues

Key details:

  • Flint 3 setup as main home router (firmware 4.8.1).
  • I have a guest network setup and Bark enabled, and devices on the guest network are having DNS issues.
  • Under the Flint 3 settings, Network > DNS if I enable "Override DNS Settings of All Clients" the DNS lookup works but the interface shows a warning that the option saying "Bark blocks almost all DNS requests from clients sent to the Internet. If you enable this option while Bark is working, your clients may not be able to access the Internet." so I don’t know if that is a good idea.

Is anyone else seeing DNS issues for their guest network? Or could you give it a test?

Hi

We conducted tests using Flint 3 with firmware version 4.8.1 and Bark enabled, but we were unable to reproduce the issue.

It's possible that devices on the guest network have DNS configuration issues, which could be resolved by overriding the router's DNS settings.

If the current configuration is functioning properly, this warning can be ignored.

I am having exactly the same issue. Have a guest wifi on 2.4ghz and as soon as I activate Bark I lose DNS for all devices on the guest network. The override does seems to fix it and thanks! It was driving me nuts, was about to disable bark permanently.

Looks like a bug and I was able to replicate it all the time.

Hi

Could you please let us know:

  1. The device model (I assume it's Flint 3) and firmware version
  2. What the Bark and DNS settings were when the issue occurred—please share screenshots with us
  3. What DNS address devices on the guest Wi-Fi obtained?
  4. Please make sure the private DNS or secure DNS have been disabled on the devices in guest Wi-Fi.

Flint 3, 3.8.1

Bark was showing the devices on the guest network and all of them were on the ignore list.

The guest network DNS was 8.8.8.8. About 10 different IOT devices and my mobile could not resolve anything. Happens all the time and had to disable Bark since the override doesn't let it work anyway.

No private or secure DNS on the clients.

Please try changing the DNS settings in the devices on your guest network to Flint 3's Guest LAN address (default is 192.168.9.1) and see if this helps or not.

It's possible that Bark is blocking access to their custom 8.8.8.8 DNS, preventing DNS resolution.
You can also run the following commands on your phone/PC connected to the guest network to confirm:

ping 8.8.8.8
nslookup dns.google
