GL.iNet GL-M2 Development Board Questions

I’m really interested in this product. I know it’s a development board, but are there any enclosures available so that I can use this safely outside the house?

Does GL.iNet have any plans to release a version with a case like an actual commercial product?

Apparently Quectel makes the RM520N-GL, but does it utilize a Qualcomm modem? If so, which one?

Are there multiple versions of the RM520N-GL? Since there are many global frequencies and I intend to mainly use this in Canada, the US, and Mexico, I’m assuming it’ll work fine and that there is only one GL-M2 Development Board?

Is it possible to remove the RM520N-GLfrom the development board and even insert it into a Banana Pi board since it also has a M.2 slot?

Thank you!

Help?

Hi,

Thank you very much for your love on GL products.

The M.2 dev board is positioning for temporary use or developer debugging, so it does not come with a casing, I think is not suitable for outdoor use.

You can 3D print a casing to it.

We plan to release a 4G USB modem (dongle), complete product form with the case, but I don’t know if 4G is satisfied with your needs.

It is used Qualcomm X62 chip.

There seem to be multiple versions, but it is fully supported for use in North America.

This depends on whether the Banana Pi supports driver Quectel modules, is it?

Thanks Bruce!

Is there a reason why the X62 isn’t mentioned in the specs? Seems pretty important for people to know.

Will GL.iNet make an updated development board with a newer SD modem like a x7x or x8x?

When you say fully supported, I’m assuming that if I order it, it’ll be fully compatible with T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, Telus, Bell, and Rogers?

I don’t know and I’ll have to double-check. My thinking is that if my use case changes, instead of selling it, I could repurpose it in another device. So if the OS has the drivers, then I can remove the Quectel from the development board and insert it into something else with an M.2 slot? Then I’ll have to ensure the antennas exist and maybe connect to the Quectel?

The 4G USB modem is very good news and if priced appropriately, I would be interested. Will it be fully supported by OpenWRT? My biggest fear would be GL.iNet ending support and security patches are required to keep it safe. I don’t know about the rest of the world, but in Canada and the US, the 4G LTE networks are planned for shutdown in the early 2030s. We need less e-waste so the longer this is in use the better for me and your customers. Any potential release date?

Slightly OT, but I would like to see more GL.iNet products fully supported by OpenWRT like the Flint 2 and Beryl AX. So more Mediatek-based products please!

Sure, I think we should add an explanation that it is SD X62 modem.

M.2 does not have this plan for the time being, but you can purchase new Quectel modules.

I think the cellular network of each operator, even each SIM card of same operator, may be different. Just sure that the RM520N-GL supports most cellular frequency bands in North America and can be used in.
If you have any questions, you can communicate with the technical support team to troubleshot.

Regarding the 4G USB dongle, it is expected to be released on Q4 2025.
It is not built with OpenWRT, but closed-source Linux.
Based on its hardware and performance, we have to redesign a lightweight GUI for the simple settings. It is actually an ordinary USB dongle.

Everyone else specifies which modem they use, why not GL.iNet? We all know Quectel is unlikely to be big enough to develop its own modems. Just tell your customers what they need to know.

I don't understand what you mean by this. "M.2 does not have this plan for the time being, but you can purchase new Quectel modules."

I don't know which variant GL.iNet is selling in North America. I think you should tell us.

It doesn't sound like I'll be the target customer with your dongle. I want long-term support and a closed-source device is basically e-waste sooner or later given GL.iNet's track record.

I think the detail model on sale of the official website is RM520N-GL_GLAA
