Gl-inet router says 'Wrong Key' on wifi repeater join

Wanted to join this thread as I got the ‘Wrong Key’ error today when using my GL-AR300M16 abroad for the first time.

The hotel WiFi I am trying to connect to and use via the repeater feature, has a # symbol in the password (as the first character). I can connect to the WiFi with a number of devices, but the GL-AR300M16 gives a ‘Wrong Key’ error when trying to connect.

I have seen mention of different firmware versions above to resolve issues with special chars. I am currently running 3.212. Is this a bug in this release?

Any advice would be welcomed if there is an option that will resolve this and get this working?

If I remember right this is a FW 3.212 issue and should be solved in 3.215.
I’m only on a beryl, but I would give the beta a try: GL.iNet download center

I do think they are active at the 4 development for the newer devices, right now. Let’s hope the waiting will also bring FW 4.x for the AR300 devices

So I figured I’d try upgrading to the 3.215 beta and no luck. Did notice that when you try to input the password and are waiting for the error to come back, it kicks me off the AR300M16 WiFi hotspot (and the SSID disappears briefly) so looks like its causing some kind of exception that restarts the hotspot service.

One problem for connecting to Unifi networks, when Unifi enabled “band steering” it will cause the mini router failed to connect as repeater on 2.4G. 5G is fine.

I cannot connect to wifi 2.4g that has no password (after a long pause it says “wrong key”). 5g works fine (without password).

I am very sure that this is caused by the “band steering” setting in the Unify network. It just stop reponding to your request on 2.4G, thus forcing you to connect 5G.

We will do a research how to solve such problems.

laptops, ipad, phone devices. right now my phone is connected by 2.4G (I checked network connection).

sometimes the 5G signal is out of range and Mudi can only detect 2.4G, which it is unable to connect to.

Another possibility for not connecting to 2.4GHz wifi is that Protected Management Frames (PMF) may be enabled on the wifi access point.

I have a Unifi AP with Band Steering disabled and had problems connecting an old 2.4GHz-only travel router (not OpenWRT). I traced the problem to the PMF Required setting on the Unifi AP, but the old router does not have PMF support and PMF is mandatory for WPA3. Even for WPA2/WPA Mixed, the setting can only be PMF Optional, so I eventually had to turn off WPA3 and only have WPA2 with PMF Disabled on 2.4GHz, but not 5GHz.

Maybe the GL.iNet router has PMF support that can be enabled.

@alzhao I am having the same “Wrong Key” problem. It was working fine connecting wirelessly via repeater to my home wifi. but yesterday it stopped working. It stopped working the day before because of internet issues but I was able to reconnect MT1300 to the wifi again. I left the house, came back later that day. The wifi was working but the mt1300 internet wasn’t working. I went into the admin panel, tried to reconnect to the wifi, it wouldn’t do it. I reset the device (short and long), updated the firmware to the latest version 3.215, and it still says, “Wrong Key” when I try to connect to the wifi. I brought it to my friend’s house, connected the mt1300 to her router via ethernet. The internet worked. I tried to connect to the wifi via repeater with it connected to the router via ethernet and without it connected to the router via ethernet. It didn’t work. So, this isn’t just my internet, it is happening with other wifi connections too. I can’t connect the MT1300 to my home router because my roommate is a jerk. I need help! It has to be connected wirelessly and I need the VPN on the MT1300 for work. I can’t just connect regular.

@alzhao I upgraded to 4.1 beta and it works! Thank you so much for the suggestion! If possible, I would still like your thoughts on why the official release of 3.215 stopped working so suddenly.
