GL-MiFi-A + EC25-A + T-Mobile SIM not working

Hello, I’m new here, just bought a GL-MiFi with EC25-A modem for a T-Mobile SIM. I’m a Linux noob so please be gentle.

After I received my MiFi, I brought it to a sales person at T-Mobile for a SIM. Picked up a 6GB plan and SIM card and they inserted it in the MiFi for me. Brought it home later and turned on the router and went through the initial setup process. I disabled WiFi for now because I’m plugging this in to a small switch. Went to Internet Settings to set up 4G, picked USA and T-Mobile. ttyUSB2 was default, so I left it. Had no idea what Service Type to pick, so I picked W-CDMA, left everything else default. Hit Submit. Modem says “Connected” but under that I get “Connecting to Internet”.

So I start troubleshooting by re-inserting the SIM card and restarting the MiFi. No go.

I then started changing 3/4G settings and, long story short, the only combination that gives me any hope is by choosing the cdc-wdm0 (qmi) device with either Service Type. The 3G/4G LED flashes every 3 or 4 seconds but never connects. With these settings, IPAddr in Modem Connection now says “undefined” instead of “Connecting to Internet”.

After checking out some forum posts, I tried changing the APN to ‘fast.t-mobile.com’ which didn’t do anything.

I decide to check out the Advanced Settings and notice that the modem is sending packets, but not receiving any.

System Log shows that with W-CDMA, it seems to fail detecting the modem. Changing it to CDMA2000 detects the modem and MAC address, ultimately getting a modem (19485): Command failed: Unknown error, then a qmi bringup failed, followed by some Sending discover… entries, then says "Could not find gateway for interface modem (wwan0) and finally reloading the firewall. The 3G/4G continues to flash.

I have done a firmware update to 2.264 and performed another factory reset after that. Any ideas??

I appreciate the help!

Update to the latest firmware 2.271, and make sure your simcard has no pin code. If it does, connect it to your smartphone and remove the pincode and try again.

Johnex - thank you for the reply, I’ll give it a shot and let you know how it goes.

Not having read over everything here I just want to note that USA t-mobile is gsm/lte they’ve never had cdma – that would be Verizon/Sprint in the USA

I am happy to report that the issue was the SIM card. T-Mobile incorrectly set me up with an in-car service instead of a general hotspot service. Once that was changed, it worked. I appreciate everyone’s help!

wow that seems ridiculous. data is data

Agreed. They mentioned different ‘provisioning’ for some specific device called “SyncUp DRIVE”. What boggles me is that they handled the MiFi itself when I asked them for the plan/card, so it was obvious that I wasn’t asking for the SyncUp. Oof.

True, but “W-CDMA” is actually the “real” name for “GSM 3G” (“HSDPA” or “HSUPA”, I can never remember).

IIRC, aren’t the in-car service plans much better (i.e., cheaper and more data than the equivalent phone plan)? You probably just needed a different APN.

They didn’t mention another APN for that, but the plans cost the same. $25/month for 6GB.
