GL-X3000 - Bridge Mode WAN IP Passthrough

No need to reset the modem you can do it right through the network tab. Just did it the other day as I found many features when using the app while on passthrough were broken. All prior settings came right back no fuss no muss.

what exactly is broken when using passthrough? if there’s a lot of stuff that doesn’t work, perhaps i should just leave it alone…it does seem to work right now as is, pfsense just gets an IP in the 192.168.8.0 subnet instead of having the t-mo public IP.

Many options in the network tab on the app, ipv6 options a few other quirks I missed and can’t really recall right now. I went with passthrough in hopes of getting a bit better speeds and got maybe 2-3ms better response. Went back to router mode. I am also feeding it to a pfsense box primarily for faster VPN performance. I can max out my t-mobile connection to about 600mbps and the Spitz topped out around 300. Also have the pfsense box on static and using the DMZ option for it.

I have been trying to set this up to work reliably for months and it keeps causing a failover to my second WAN every few minutes especially during heavy downloads. I would love nothing better to get this working as in my Area 5G is 5 times faster than what I can get on Starlink. I got the Starlink out of desperation due to the unreliable nature of this setup.

Router Firmware: 4.8.3

@bruce (or anyone) is there any chance you can help me out? It’s worth noting that if the GL-X3000 is in the default router mode it is rock solid as I never get disconnected but with my setup I need it to work in passthrough mode reliably. Is there something obvious which I am not doing here which is causing these disconnects?

Hello,

The black log screenshot should be a router, and their WAN3 is connected to the X3000 LAN, correct?

I would like to know if a PC is connected to the X3000 LAN and check if the network port will go down and up. (X3000 in passthrough mode)

There is no difference between the route mode and passthrough mode for the LAN port. You mentioned that the LAN port is stable in route mode. I think it should not go down in passthrough mode.

  1. Please export the X3000 log when the issue reproduces and PM me to check it.
  2. Please observe the passthrough IP from the X3000 in PC or the (black log) router WAN3 to check if the IP changes frequently.

@bruce thanks for replying!

  • The Black Log is the router (Unifi Dream Machine Pro) and it is connected to the LAN port of the X3000.

  • Yes it is WAN3 (EE is owned by BT hence the name mismatch).

  • There is no PC connected to the LAN port of the X3000, only my router (Dream Machine Pro)

  • Sorry to be more clear, when I used the X3000 in router mode it was stable when I connected clients to it via WiFI. I don’t use the LAN ports in this setup.

  • The Logs from X3000 indicate that the DHCP lease on the IP address lasts 7200 seconds and it seems to renew with the same address each time

  • Logs attached

  • In my experience this disconnects seem to happen during heavy downloads more frequently.

@bruce here is a new log. At around 22:46 on 11th March I had another disconnection.

I have factory reset the X3000 then put it into passthrough mode. My download client started around 22:32 then around 14 mins later I got a disconnection.

@bruce In the failed state it literally stops detecting my SIM card until I reboot the x3000

@bruce I was able to figure it out. It appears to be some kind of hardware fault with Sim Card Slot 1 intermittently not being able to read the SIM. I swapped to using SIM card Slot 2 and I am not getting this issue any longer. Still it’s a shame that Slot 1 can’t be used any more but I suppose I can live with it for a stable connection!

I have this same issue with my GL-X3000 for SIM slot 1. Have to use SIM slot 2.

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply.
Thank you very much for the update!
We have been trying to reproduce the issue over the past few days but did not reproduce anything similar.

Apologize it appears this Spitz AX unit may have a hardware issue with the SIM1 card slot. Please try inserting a new SIM card into the Spitz AX’s SIM1 slot to test if the issue persists.

If the issue reproduce in SIM1 slot with new SIM card, please email to cs@gl-inet.com and cite your post, we will provide after-sales support.

Hello,

Please share the issue syslog with me in PM, will check the log to confirm if the issue in SIM1 slot, btw please test with a relatively new SIM card.

Hello,

Is this method possible with the GL-X2000 ?

Yes it worked on my gl-x2000

I bought a GL-X3000 to specifically use this feature, but it’s not working for me on 4.8.3. I’ve ran the API command and the device does NOT turn off the wifi, and the it just provides the 192.168.8.xx address on the lan port - even after multiple reboots and multiple devices.

I do find it odd that there is no result returned. The GUI removes all extra router options, and in the settings for the cellular modem it does NOT show the pass through IP that that @bruce has shown a couple times.

I can provide logs if needed

FWIW, I never found it very reliable even when I was using it. It would sometimes just drop and not come back up until a reboot. In the end, I put up with double NAT, and used an L2TP tunnel to a local ISP to get a real IP address.

Hello, please revert it to normal router mode by pressing the reset button for 4 seconds. Then navigate to the admin panel -> NETWORK ->NAT to see if Full Cone NAT is enabled. Please make sure this option is disabled and try again.

@bruce @Cathy an upgrade to 4.9 beta 4 on the X3000 did not bring any joy either. Do I need to downgrade to a stable version? Is the passthrough function available in 4.9?

Same symptoms here with a Spitz AX on 4.9. The two lights (Internet + Cellular) go off for a few seconds, Wifi (2.4 + 5 Ghz) continue to blink. GUI changes. The Full Cone NAT setting was disabled beforehand.

Many thanks for the feedback. We will verify the issue.

Hello @mnavis29 confirmed the 4.9 beta doesn't support passthrough function. Sorry for the inconvenience caused. Currently we recommend using it with v4.8 or 4.7.
