Hi community,
i am using a Comet RM1 and I am very happy with it.
I am planning to use it for each new workstation/server and retrofitting the old ones.
Here is where my proposal is coming from.
Having an additional external device for each computer will become a cable management challenge pretty fast.
Would it be possible to have a Comet KVM as a PCIe addin card?
So the (current) Comet hardware would be inside the computer case, hidden and protected.
The connectors could be remain the same (USB, HDMI, Ethernet, etc.) and be on the outside of the PC, like for other addin cards.
They would connect to the PCs ports like before.
The USB-C power input should be on the outside too, because not all Ethernet connections are PoE, so if needed there could still be an external power source. Also some Motherboards support USB charging while the PC is off, that could be used as power source too.
The ATX Board component would sit on the same addin card and be already inside the PC case, easy to connect to the motherboard.
The PCIe (1x for example) connector could be a dummy, because it would be only used for slotting in / fixating the addin card.
A hardware like this would be very useful for me and maybe for others too ![]()
Edit: For the power delivery I found out that the ATX 24pin connector from the power supply to the motherboard has a 5VSB-Rail (pin 9, purple) which should be always on, as long as the power supply is connected to a power source. With a passthrough adapter it should be possible to fork/harvest the 5V power from there ![]()
Edit2: I double checked compatibility:
All power supplies with ATX 2.3 (since 2005) support at least 5V2A continous, ATX 3.0 (2022) supports at least 5V3A continuous.
