I’m currently at a hotel and trying to connect. Uniquely, I have my phone (Android), my laptop (Windows 10), and my work tablet (Ipad), so I’m able to test these issues with all three. I also don’t run a VPN, just the basic router.
This particular room has an ethernet cable, so I was able to connect it to my router and connect to the internet on all three devices via the router’s wireless signal. Usually when I do that though, I only have to sign in to the network’s captive portal once, and then all three devices connect. For some reason, it made me sign in on each device individually this time. I checked to see if it should them as different devices, but they all show the same outside IP address. Finally, I can’t connect to 192.168.8.1. It says ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE on the android, Timeout on the Windows. I haven’t yet signed in to the captive portal via the ipad yet, and trying to go to 192.168.8.1 takes me to the captive portal again, which it shouldn’t. Odd. It’s like I’m connecting to the network directly, not through the router.
For a while, I was having issues connecting through as a repeater, but now that’s decided to start working. idk.
Now the issues with the repeater are starting back up. My laptop is randomly disconnecting and won’t auto-reconnect to the router. I put up a post similar to this in the past, and I’ll be honest, I let it die because the issue stopped. But now it’s going again. It only seems to happen with the laptop, not with the phone or tablet.

You’re associated with a Cisco AP in the logs - so a couple of things might be happening…
WDS might not be enabled on the AP - maybe
Likely - The Cisco WLC might be detecting rogue AP’s and dropping you - this is common in WLAN’s for corp/enterprise/hospitality/college networks - Cisco AP’s can look for certain characteristics here.
First time - they’ll deauth wifi, forcing an 802.11 association over again, and then you end up in a bad place, as the WLC knows the client MAC address, so it refuses to grant a DHCP address, and then the client gets in a bad way by dropping the connection and associating again…
Yeah, well, I’m sorta dumb. I’m a user that understands the basics and can follow directions, but I’m no network or IT guy.
If I understand you right in point 2, wouldn’t the access point be dropping the whole router then? Right now it’s only causing issues on my laptop. The Android phone and Ipad stay connected just fine while the laptop drops off.
So I guess that means there’s no way to trouble shoot this? A travel router is kind of useless if it doesn’t work in hotels.
For the record, that was the log for that particular hotel. This issues where 1. my laptop will connect and work fine for a couple minutes 2. disconnect on its own from the router 3. won’t reconnect despite being an “auto connect” network, all while my other devices stay connected just fine, happens in multiple locations. I don’t know if they’re all Cisco systems, but there has to be a way to dig into this more to find out what’s happening.
