Help me configure ProtonVPN for the router

I'm looking for opinions to help me configure ProtonVPN for my Beryl AX. I know there's a lot of marketing behind the features of the VPN. I just don't know how effective they are in practice.

Based on my experience with Proton so far, I haven't been impressed with their NetShield filters. Even if it has been impressive, does it make sense to have ad, tracking, and malware blocking at the router level for general usage?

Moderate NAT and NAT-PMP (Port Forwarding) are disabled by default. Should I leave it like that?

VPN Accelerator is enabled by default and seems to have a lot of hype. I don't know if it actually works. Keep it enabled or disable it?

The goal for this configuration is privacy and security. I'm still leaning toward using a custom DNS if I need ad, tracking, and malware protection at the router level.

This will work as described in Increase speeds by up to 400% with VPN Accelerator | Proton VPN
But it will not work for router configuration, only their apps.

Oh really? Yet, that option is available for routers.

According to protonvpn's linux-vpn-setup

Our official app is the best way to use Proton VPN on your Linux PC. It natively supports advanced Proton VPN features, including:

  • NetShield Ad-blocker
  • Kill Switch
  • VPN Accelerator
  • Moderate NAT
  • Port forwarding
  • Custom DNS
  • Auto-connect at startup
  • IPv6
  • Pin servers to tray

Whatever from this list is not supported by OpenVPN or WireGuard or router OS, then it won't work on router as well.
You can follow ProtonVPN-specific features support via plugins? for any workarounds on that.

Do you have Proton?

Yes I have protonvpn (subscription plan) and I have beryl mt-3000.

Same setup as me. If you go to the Wireguard configurator, there is an option to enable/disable VPN accelerator for routers. Seems odd for Proton to have that option if it doesn't work for routers.

Interesting, I may be mistaken on that. Thanks for letting me know.
