How to turn GL-B2200 into an access point

Is is possible to change the settings of a Velica, aka GL-B2200, so it acts as an access point instead of a router? Currently it has its own private subnet, 192.168.8.0, and I want wifi clients to receive their IP addresses via DHCP from my main router connected to the cable modem which happens to be a GL-AX1800, 192.168.1.0 subnet.

I have browser access to Luci if that is the way to go. If someone has done this could you document the steps involved?

Thanks - Roland

Hi

Please see:

Above is a screen shot from the GL-B2200 web administration. As you can see there is no “Network Mode” settings. This is why I am asking how to turn the GL-B2200 into an access point because the traditional method for other GL.iNet routers does not exist on a GL-B2200.

Please try updating the firmware to the latest stable version, v3.218.

It includes support for Network Mode – AP mode.

I also noticed it appears you are not testing on a B2200. I have a “Mesh” choice on the side panel and you do not which is unique to the B2200.

The main device was already at 3.218, I upgraded and was able to get the other node to the same level but still no “Network Mode” menu choice. Is there a configuration file I can edit to enable this option? I can ssh/sftp into the router if need be.

Your device appears to be in Mesh mode, which is why the Network Mode option isn’t available.

Please try resetting it and set it up using a wired connection (instead of the mobile app).

I want it in Mesh mode and act as an access point instead of having its own private network. I would like to know if this combination is possible and if so how to set it up.

When you switch it to AP mode, it connects to the upstream router's network without creating its own.

I don’t understand your response. I am asking the following:

  1. Can a GL-B2200 run in both Mesh mode and AP mode?
  2. If so what are the steps to switch the GL-B2200 from router mode to AP mode?

Thank you for your help.

Please refer to our response below:

  1. Mesh mode and AP mode are different operating modes of the router, so they cannot run at the same time.
  2. If the B2200 has already been configured in Mesh mode, you will need to reset the device you plan to set as AP mode to factory settings and initialize it using a wired connection instead of the app. After that, you can find the Network Mode setting in the Admin Panel and switch it to AP mode.

Thank you, this answers my question,

Worth noting that the Velica supports wired mesh. If you have a wireless mesh setup already and then connect the master node to a slave node via cable (LAN to WAN) you’ll have a wired mesh system which is “better” than an AP.
