I wish to ask this question mainly to the developers of the GL inet line. Do you have any plans to update the "Mini Routers" like the Shadow and include more powerful hardware. I would like to purchase a Mini Router the same size as the Shadow with the internals and power of the GL-MT2500. Is this something that is being discussed and a product we might see updated in the coming months or years?
I travel the world full time, with limited luggage, so size and weight are important. The Beryl AX and Slate 7 are both too big. The Slate 7 was a major disappointment, as it is the largest and heaviest travel router GL iNet has ever sold.
After years of using GL iNet travel routers, starting with a Shadow, then an AR750, and finally an AR750S, I have bought something else, as GL iNet no longer makes new small travel routers. I now run something that is smaller, faster, and frankly, superior in every way to my previous GL iNet routers. I really wish GL iNet would have focused on their niche of a small, cheap travel router, instead of making every new model bigger, heavier and more power hungry.
I'm using the Shadow when I travel since it uses very little power and since most public internet has very limited bandwidth, this little VPN router does wonders. I found that to get the best stability on the latest firmware, I had to select the option to lock the frequency at 20mhz when using it as a repeater and since doing so, the little unit has been very stable.
My original question was more out of curiosity than a complain. I really enjoy the Shadow's form factor and was wondering if a refresh with perhaps 2.4g/5g connectivity was perhaps envisioned down the road...
Thanks for all the replies and comments. Keep them coming.
The Creta uses the same SOC as the Shadow and has 2.4 and 5 Ghz, but then once you go to this form factor you might as well use the original Slate , my choice for international travel because of it's balance between power, speed, power requirement and size (and yes I have very many Gl.Inet routers).
The original Shadow was planned to have 5GHz add-on board. This was never released to the really sold as product, because it was causing overheating issues in this small device.
More power often requires more energy and therefore more heat. And keeping that cool requires space for stuff keep it cool. So... there's likely much of why they got bigger...
