Installed openwrt 24. While updating plugins the gui fails. Tried luci and gui.
Also order of luci updates causes failure to install luci.

I'll play with the 53 updates to see what is going on.

updating all plugins is not advised.

Some of these updates belong to the core openwrt packages, however due to the nature of OpenWrt and its toolchain these often are not compatible with the current kernel or base, when the developers compile snapshots which are not publicly announced yet, these packages could potentially get it's entrance to the plugins section, this is also the case with Vanilla OpenWrt.

This can result in soft bricking your router because it could get into a boot loop in the worst case.

Updating plugins does not equal maintaining security, security fixes get added via firmware updates as image, only upgrade a plugin if a dev tells you to, because he knows if it is possible.

However that does not mean you cannot use the plugins section, yes you can but only for user based packages, i.e tcpdump, tor, pbr, things you have installed yourself in specific.

A few of the plugins to not update:

  • ucode
  • busybox
  • netifd
  • Libubox
  • luci (mainly because you have to follow the dependencies, which are exactly those which could break it)

basicly as I have said before, safest approach is only keep it on user based installed packages, avoid upgrading what you don't know.

Well, after reading a well compelled argument against updating every plug-in you still fell you need every plug-in updated all I can say is good speed......... :call_me_hand:

If you really want programs updated without messing your system you should try docker compose with Dockge.

A N100/N150 mini PC or an Amlogic box with Debian is a good start.

If you're going to advise x86_64 with something like Debian you might as well just jump over to Arch rather than dealing with just another static release cycle distro. There's my 0.02USD.

Guess I can just install openwrt.
I'd like to know what causes failure.

Also on normal OpenWrt this is the same with the package manager.

However there are plugins specific for OpenWrt which can do a better upgrade.

Such packages can be found here:

These are likely not compatible with the gl firmware, since the gl firmware uses modifications different than the normal OpenWrt, also for luci, this could break luci, especially if the gl firmware still use nginx as backend.

And you have this:
https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org/ there is a option to predefine packages, but please also consult this here.

I think I updated all luci without complaints. When I directly started at luci updates it complained.

My original issue was the web admin page was unavailable or waiting too long. Makes me think some update to how web displays or served is being broken.

My original reason on this was tvheadend newer and trying to play with a TV tuner.
