MT300N - Wifi dropping continually

Recently purchsed an MT300N to ultimately se as an OpenVPN client. Before setting up OpenVPN I have just configured as a router. Wired connection into WAN and wireless to my laptop.

Unfortunately the wifi signal keeps dropping, sometimes as much as every 30-40 seconds. Have tried both 300N and 150N. If I connect my laptop to the LAN port it works perfectly.

Have tried factory reset but no different.

Running latest v2.22 firmware.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

generally this may be a problem of power supply. Can you please check if the power supply supplies at least 5V1A?

Or can you try one other power adapter?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have tried three different power supplies - one at 5V1A one at 5V2.1A and an Ipad charger which I believe is 2.2A.

Hi alzhao,

I only received this yesterday. If it is not teh PSU and I have update dteh firmware, should I arrange with Amazaon to return for a replacement?

Hi alzhao,

As I need this for the weekend I have processed a return/refund from Amazon and purchased a replacement.

I have encountered this same problem with the MT300N that I bought last week through Amazon. No power supply resolves the problem. If I don’t see a solution posted here by the morning, I will have to return the router.

@fr44, can you put a sticker on the router saying it has dropping signals and return to Amazon?

I will do that. In the meantime, I’ll be ordering another one. Hoping this is just an odd defect.

I got the router back. It is a long way to return.

I am using it and seems fine. I will give to engineering dept for investigation.

I had a similar problem: wifi constantly drops and reconnects. From Ubuntu the problem wasn’t so annoying because it silently reconnected but on Windows 10 it was almost not possible even to do something on admin panel. In the same time the router was under load from TV. It was slightly heat but not hot.
I updated firmware to the last 3.X.X but the problem still occurred.
I changed Wifi transmittion power to 16 but this not helped.
I changed adapter to a bigger one from iPad that gives 2A and this not helped.
In Luci I opened System Log but there was nothing special except of hundreds of the message that my computer stokito-serv recconnects:

Sat Oct  3 22:42:06 2020 daemon.info dnsmasq-dhcp[2367]: DHCPREQUEST(br-lan) 192.168.8.147 2c:fd:a1:60:c9:7c

Then I installed OpenWrt 19.07.4 and now in Luci I can see Wireless menu (i.e. opensource driver) and there I removed SSIDs and created a new one from scratch.
Now it works fine but on the first connection I again had one drop of wifi and in the logs found some error call stack:

But then wifi works well and I decided to write my expirience here

Hehe - a Necrobug…

Anyways - OpenWRT 1907 uses the FOSS mediatek/ralink driver - GL-Inet on MT300N uses the MT closed source driver.

Anyways - you’re seeing a Tx Queue timeout on 19.07… and there, the watchdog kicks, and brings everything back up again - I’m more focused on the QC-Atheros devices, not so much into the MTK stuff at the moment.

If you see this with the factory builds - much more relevant.

static void dev_watchdog(unsigned long arg)
{
struct net_device *dev = (struct net_device *)arg;

netif_tx_lock(dev);
if (!qdisc_tx_is_noop(dev)) {
	if (netif_device_present(dev) &&
	    netif_running(dev) &&
	    netif_carrier_ok(dev)) {
		int some_queue_timedout = 0;
		unsigned int i;
		unsigned long trans_start;

		for (i = 0; i < dev->num_tx_queues; i++) {
			struct netdev_queue *txq;

			txq = netdev_get_tx_queue(dev, i);
			trans_start = txq->trans_start;
			if (netif_xmit_stopped(txq) &&
			    time_after(jiffies, (trans_start +
						 dev->watchdog_timeo))) {
				some_queue_timedout = 1;
				txq->trans_timeout++;
				break;
			}
		}

		if (some_queue_timedout) {
			WARN_ONCE(1, KERN_INFO "NETDEV WATCHDOG: %s (%s): transmit queue %u timed out\n",
			       dev->name, netdev_drivername(dev), i);
			dev->netdev_ops->ndo_tx_timeout(dev);
		}
		if (!mod_timer(&dev->watchdog_timer,
			       round_jiffies(jiffies +
					     dev->watchdog_timeo)))
			dev_hold(dev);
	}
}
netif_tx_unlock(dev);

dev_put(dev);

}

ok, it was fine only while I wrote the post :frowning: As far I understood something wrong with antenna or driver so I’ll try to return the router to seller. But I already liked it so if anybody have some hints what can I try then I’ll try

Ok, I figured out that when I switched to OpenWrt firmware some original settings from GL were kept.
So I again pressed Reset to factory button and now everything looks working stable: connection is stable and wifi is connected even under load.

…and it was stable only half of day :frowning: so again, the problem repeats
