Opal 4.3.28 - WiFi Calling

Hi guys! I’m having problems using WiFi calling on my Opal device when using NordVPN. I’ll try to be as detailed as possible to let you know what I have happening. Before I start however I’d like like to explain that it’s 100% needed that I stay on airplane mode and only use wifi calling.

When using a my phone connected directly to my normal modem and using the NordVPN app on my phone I can make calls with no issues. If I connect to the Opal and use the NordVPN app on my phone but do not have OpenVPN client running on the Opal then I can make calls with no issues. It’s only when I enable the OpenVPN that I have the errors where my phone is telling me that I need to connect to wifi. However the wifi is working fine otherwise! This was done with phone’s VPN off by the NordVPN app. I’ve removed the NordVPN profile as well to see if that would make a difference and it doesn’t.

In the past I’ve been able to use my phone’s wifi calling on all devices with no problems so it seems to be something with the OpenVPN Nord connection that’s blocking it when I connect to the Opal device.

Again, when connecting to Opal with my phone’s VPN off, the VPN profile deleted it still doesn’t work… but will go back to working if I disable the OpenVPN client.

I’ve done some research and I did turning off Network Acceleration but it didn’t resolve this issue for me.

Please help I need this for work ASAP!

How are you running 4.3.28 when the stable is 4.3.25 and the beta is 4.7.2

hello hecatae, GL.iNet ship new opal's with 4.3.28 (i recently see one from my brother-in-law). We asked some time ago in another topic the download link without success.

Hi,

Based on your description, we believe your ISP has restrictions on using WiFi Calling over a VPN network.
The reason WiFi Calling works normally when you use NordVPN directly on your phone may be that the phone’s operating system automatically routes WiFi Calling traffic outside of the VPN tunnel.

Therefore, the only possible solution may be to disable NordVPN when using WiFi Calling, or to use a policy-based VPN configuration to route WiFi Calling traffic outside the VPN.

Regarding the issue others mentioned about SFT1200 v4.3.28: this firmware is a factory firmware and does not include any new features or bug fixes compared to v4.3.25, which is why it has not been published in the download center.

Apologies for my late reply. Hecatae, Deva is right, my device shipped with this version. Wil.qiu I think I solved my issue but I’m not sure the exact fix. I updated to the beta firmware and used wireguard for Nord instead of OpenVPN. After doing this and ensuring that the NordVPN app was not open on my phone I was able to call over WiFi with no issues.
