Purchase advice: dumb APs + a backup 5G/LTE link in a house

So I've got a bunch of dumb APs and a router with OpenWRT already (with DAWN for seamless roaming). I'm looking to improve the APs (haven't yet decided on the router bit) to Flint 2 due to better hardware.

With that, I'm thinking of adding another ISP with an uplink over 5G/LTE. The router (network rack) is behind several walls under concrete stairs, so I'd rather not put such a hardware there. With that in mind, it sounds to me that it's best to have this additional ISP device closer to the external walls of the house or even put its antenna outdoors. Hence, I'm not looking to put 5G/LTE into the main router directly.

So my questions are:

  • whether there's a GL.iNet device that would be good to use for exposing a dedicated 5G/LTE connection into the network (with the main router sending the traffic there as a secondary upstream, for example)
  • whether it'd make sense to use one of the Flint 2's with some USB modem the same way (although, I'd prefer the APs to remain dumb and single-purpose)
  • or whether it's best to just go for some non-GL.iNet modem

Thoughts?

You're looking for a bridge modem.
I'd look at the ZTE mc7010 and work back from there.
While a Spirz AX would do everything you need, disabling the WiFi and just using it as a bridge modem seems like a waste.

Thanks! I also had a feeling that those Spitz / Puli (cheaper w/ current discounts) devices would be a huge overkill, so I figured I'd ask. Does the overall strategy sound okay, otherwise? Anything I haven't considered?

Overall strategy sounds Okay.
