ok, spoke too soon!
It does work as intended, however, whenever my modem renegotiates a new address from the carrier, it seems the DNS is reset to by the carrier’s own pushed address.

Should I just add the same script to netifd? Any ideas on how to revert back to my VPN’s DNS server on carrier reneg?
