Recommendation for Pixel 8 Hotspot

Hi,

I use a Sonicwall router to provide internet via a fibre connection but this drops out from time time. When this happened I would connect my Pixel 8 phone to the X1 WAN port via an ethernet adapter which gave internet to the whole house until the outage was over.

This was a bit faffy so I thought about trying a wireless bridge on X2 of the Sonicwall to the wifi hotspot of the Pixel. And failover to it when X1 was down.

I have a TP-Link MR3040 mini router with ‘client’ mode from yesteryear which seems to do the trick. It’s 2.4Ghz only with a 100Mb ethernet port. The Pixel can get over 500Mb/s on a 5G connection with the Three network so although it works and is reliable I thought I’d look further afield.

I posted on Reddit and someone said to look at the GL.Inet routers which offer similar functionality but 5GHz and gigabit ethernet.

I bought the SFT-1200 (Opal) model but while it will connect to the Pixel 8 it frequently disconnects. Every 10 seconds or so and also often won’t attempt to reconnect. Ive tried 3.x and 4.x firmwares, router with Repeater mode, then Extender mode. It’s just hasn’t been reliable.

It was a good price though.

Can anyone recommend a model that works without issues connecting to a Pixel phone hotspot? I’ve read the Mango might work better but don’t want to wing and prayer it.

Thanks

Mike

Hey @McMuckle

The SFT-1200 should be able to handle it. So we should look more into the problem itself than buying another router - I would say. The Mango offers only 100 Mbps on the LAN interface, not a real competitor therefor.

You could go with a 5G router instead, like the XE3000, but then you have to place your SIM card into this device rather than using the Pixel hotspot.

So all in all, I would recommend that we will look into the issue itself.
Please follow the few steps in this thread to provide the necessary information:

The logs will be necessary as well, I would say.

Hi,

sure, happy to try and troubleshoot this further before returning.

The TP-link is back in-situ now on X2 on the Sonicwall (hasn’t dropped in 24hrs), so I have added the SFT1200 to X3 this time. SFT1200 is on v 4.3.7 firmware, but have also tried the two 3.x firmwares that were available.

It is in router / repeater mode

What the logs hopefully show is that the SFT1200 will connect to the hotspot (called Nokia8) work for a bit drop, connect, work for a bit, drop.

The phone is a Pixel 8

I have attached the log files and some screenshots

Since I don’t own any android devices, please try to lower the encryption standard on the hotspot to WPA2 only.

Hi,

so the options for Hotspot securtity on the Pixel 8 are

WPA3-Personal
WPA2/WPA3-Personal
WPA2-Personal
None

and it is already set to WPA2-Personal.

Thanks

Mike

Do you use your Pixel 8 while being connected to the hotspot?

Yes, the Pixel 8 gets used while it is acting as a hotspot to the SFT1200.

I have a Pixel 6a as well. I’ve now set that up as a hotspot and linked it to the Opal instead of the Pixel 8 Same issue with that phone too. That phone is not being used as anything other than a hotspot.

Are we done with the troubleshooting?

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. It was more like collection diagnostic information so someone from GL can take a look into it. I am not into Wi-Fi that much, so I don’t know if the log will tell us anything.

@hansome Maybe something for you or a collegue?

Have you try usb connect to router?

Thanks. I’ll wait to hear back.

From the Sonicwall? It does have a USB port, but I think its exclusively for 3G/4G modems or additional syslog storage.

I guess the pixel will go to some wifi standby mode for hotspot.
Will the connection be stable if you use pixel 8 to connect to pixel 6a hotspot or the other way around?
A1300 is recommended if the SFT1200 cannot handle the case. The two have different chips and wifi drivers.

So I’ve connected the Pixel 8 to the Pixel 6’s hotspot and have been connected for the last 3 hours with no issues or drops. Unless the Pixel runs out of juice its hotspot appears to stay active. I’m upstairs now and the Pixel 6 is two floors away and still working OK so the range is decent.

Tomorrow I’ll reverse the roles.

Ooft. Twice the price for that model :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Had the Pixel 6a connected to the Pixel 8 hotspot most of the day with no issues or drops. Pixel 8 was on a wireless charger most of the day and used infrequently.

I have pixel 6a and almost every GL.Inet router except the SFT. Willing to test on the A1300 or the Mt1300 to try and establish if the issue is with the pixel… If issues is every 10 seconds should be quick to test. Let me see what I can do when I get home from walking the dog :joy:

Hotspot band 2.4Ghz (Selected by router, can’t see 5Ghz because there’s no 5Ghz on board the router :stuck_out_tongue: )
Router Connected band 2,4 Ghz
All OK

So I would say it’s most likely something related to the SFT1200 ether something in the chipset as it’s the only Gl.Inet unit using the SilFlower or something to do with the firmware (which is only for the Silflower).

From my findings it would appear that the probably may be SFT1200 related so any of gl.inet’s other lines should work.

@hansome Is there anyway the gl.inet can test and hopefully assist? I know Pixel’s aren’t big (or even available? ) in SE Asia.

Things to consder if you’re considering replacing:
Single band (Mango/Shadow) - don’t forget you’ll lose half your bandwidth because you are sharing the band between repeat and transmit. The WiFi range on these units isn’t huge.

Budget - Any of the dual bands should support as well, just comes down to speeds and feeds as weight and size don’t appear to be an issue for you because it’s “fixed”

The only other thought is have you tried another USB adapter? Perhaps the USB adapters not providing enough power…

Hope this helps. If you want me to test on another unit if you decide to replace let me know and I can test for you.

P.S. If you reside in Aus, let me know and we can perhaps work something else out

Wow. Thanks very much for all that testing. You’ve gone above and beyond.

I think your probably right regarding the wifi chipset as when connecting to the Deco wifi, or a Unifi AP it seems to be more stable.

I was looking at the Mango originally, mainly due to the price but as mentioned above it doesnt sound like much of an upgrade over the existing TP-link. At least I now know it should work if I go for it.

I’ll maybe try and repurpose the SFT as something else other than backup internet to avoid sending it back. Was only £33 in some Amazon sale so probably worth keeping a hold of.

Thanks again.

Mike

I was originally using the USb port on the Sonicwall to power the SFT. When it dropped so often i swapped out for the supplied USBC power adapter but that didnt make a difference.

Maybe I can connect the SFT to something else which in turn is connected to the Pixel hotspot. I’d love to get it working just so it hasn’t beaten me

I have some spare Unifi APs hanging around, I’ll maybe see what they can do with regards a bridge to the hotspot.

Cheers
