Slate 7 Pro repeater mode super slow

Hello, bought recently Slate 7 Pro and wanted to test it on hotel wifi in repeater mode.

However speed dropped to unusable after some time after enabling repeater mode. I tried to do a reset and speed was fine just after restart, but soon dropped again

When a PC is directly connected to an upstream WiFi network, what channel does the upstream WiFi network use?

Do you have VPN, tailscale, Tor or similar functions enabled on your router?

What is the signal strength of the upstream WiFi network that the router repeater is connected to? Can you check the current WiFi signal strength by enabling Lock BSSID?

Would setting your router's Wi-Fi to a fixed channel help?

After the repeater connects to the upstream Wi-Fi network, will your PC experience problems connecting to any Wi-Fi network connected to the router?

If your PC is connected to the router via wired connection, are the LAN speed tests normal?

If these don't help you and the problem can be consistently reproduced, could you share the device with us via GoodCloud so we can check it?

No, I can connect to any 2.4G/5G/6G router network without a problem

Laptop doesn’t have ethernet port, so can’t test it

I tried to connect to GoodCloud using existing repeater configuration, but it couldn’t connect due to high ping. I switched repeater to my phone’s hotspot but it couldn’t connect either.

So I reset the device, and connected to upstream wifi successfully. As I wrote in my initial thread message it works just after reset, but then it stops working and speed drops.

I have the same issues like ikss.

I purchased this unit in May09 and got it in my hands by May 25th. After few days I left in Europe vacation trip. Meanwhile I light tested very superficial and I did notice very poor speed and not consistent and kind of slow connection as WIFI repeater mode. I tried with&without NordVPN, WG tunnel and Tor but with same results. My Asus wifi router asus BE88u has solid speed at 2.4G/5G/6Ghz and never had issues. I tested & connected for all 3 bands, with MLO and without MLO, but same results very slow speed. I kept Slate 7 pro very close to my WIFI router and my laptop also (approx 5m). The direct WIFI connection of my laptop with WIFI router is blazing fast and consistent (approx 1GB/s). I also change the laptop and tried the speed by cellphone…but still Slate 7 Pro is very slow and buggy…:frowning:

I also have a GliNet Slate 7 router which is running very solid, fast and consistent. I always compare my tests with Slate 7 which is much faster and solid.

I believe this hardware is defected from production and day 1.

I also flashed the lasted firmware 4.8.4 on my Slate 7 Pro and firmware 4.9.0 for Slate 7. and nothing changed. I did factory reset on Slate 7 Pro but no results….same slow speed.

I am very disappointed for this device performance. My order is #CA7608

Please let me know what to do from this step. I guess the device is buggy and defective.

What speed test data do you get when you connect to the Slate 7 Pro's WiFi?

Do you have the means to perform a wired test? For example, a WAN Ethernet connection followed by a PC connected to the LAN.

Are there problems with both wireless and wired connections?

Don't worry, we just want to confirm whether it's a WiFi problem or a problem with the router itself.

I did the wired (CAT8 Ethernet cable ) tests and/or combined with WIFI connection tests again and these are my results:

1. Straight WIFI and Wired connection from WIFI Asus Router to my laptops and cell phones as reference before do Slate 7 Pro tests:

Wired = 1000mb/s

WIFI 7 @ 6ghz = 950mb/s (at 5m range)

WIFI 7 @ 5ghz = 930mb/s (at 5m range)

WIFI 7 @ 2.4ghz = 820mb/s (at 5m range)

All results were done 3x for check stability, were consistent and solid.

2. WIFI connection from Slate 7 Pro (wifi Repeater Mode) to Asus BE88U WIFi router and WIFI connection to my laptops&phones

WIFI 7 @ MLO = 100-170mb/s (at 5m range) jumping up&down, relative stable

WIFI 7 @ 6ghz = 100-150mb/s (at 5m range) jumping up&down, not stable

WIFI 7 @ 5ghz = 100-120mb/s (at 5m range) jumping up&down, not consistent

WIFI 7 @ 2.4ghz = 20-50mb/s (at 5m range) not consistent, jumping up&down

The WIFI connection (Repeter mode) to WIFI ASUS router was done by 2.4 & 5 & 6Ghz channels. The worst results were for 2.4ghz modes and for 5 & 6Ghz were better but not consistent and stable.

3. Straight WAN WIRED Cable connection from Slate 7 Pro to Asus BE88U WIFi router and WIFI connection to my laptops&phones from Slate 7 Pro

WIFI @ MLO = 400-570mb/s (at 5m range) jumping up&down, relative stable

WIFI @ 6Ghz = 400-540mb/s (at 5m range) jumping up&down, not stable

WIFI @ 5Ghz = 400-520mb/s (at 5m range) jumping up&down, not stable

WIFI @ 2.4Ghz = 200-2500mb/s (at 5m range) jumping up&down, not consistent

4.Straight WAN WIRED Cable connection from Slate 7 Pro to Asus BE88U WIFi router and straight LAN Cable connection to my laptops & phones (USB-C to LAN Adapter 10GHZ) from Slate 7 Pro

Wired & Wired = 930-1000mb/s very stable and consistent. Rock solid.

I also noticed that sometimes the Slate 7 Pro CPU Temp is going to 70-73 degree C being in standby or doing very light internet browsing. the average CPU Temp is 65 C in standby doing nothing.

Also doing WIFI connection (on repeater mode) to my Asus Router by 6GHz channel the process is very slow and buggy, many times being failed or keep saying “Connected but not Internet connection”)

All these test were done without VPN and DPI enabled. Just simple raw connection and settings.

Please let me know if you need more info&details, MAC address or other stuff.

Sorry, I forgot to add another WIFI & Wired test made on Slate 7 Pro. It is similar and almost with same rezults as second test.

5. WIFI connection from Slate 7 Pro (wifi Repeater Mode) to Asus BE88U WIFi router and Wired LAN connection to my laptops&phones from Spate 7 Pro.

WIFI 7 @ MLO + Wired = 100-190mb/s (at 5m range) jumping up&down, relative stable

WIFI 7 @ 6ghz + Wired = 100-170mb/s (at 5m range) jumping up&down, not stable

WIFI 7 @ 5ghz + Wired = 100-150mb/s (at 5m range) jumping up&down, not consistent

WIFI 7 @ 2.4ghz + Wired = 20-50mb/s (at 5m range) not consistent, jumping up&down

Basically WIFI Repeater Mode looks weak and buggy and not Wired LAN connection….according with my logic.

As asked I perform couple of tests when returned from vacation with another WIFI network in repeater mode.

It really puzzles me but it works fine in my home network

Speed is lower, but not drastically and it is stable for one day already. I’ll wait and repeat tests in couple of days, but since my main usecase for the device is travel router I eager to help and do other tests to help you figure out the root cause

So, it seems the slow speed issue only occurs when connecting to hotel Wi-Fi?

It's unclear whether the hotel's WiFi has some kind of policy…

The repeater + WiFi client combination does indeed experience some performance loss compared to a direct connection to the upstream WiFi network.

During these tests, what frequency band, bandwidth, and channel did the BE10000 repeater connect to for its upstream Wi-Fi?

Could you collect the WiFi information of the BE10000 during the test in this scenario?

Pre-execution steps:

Information to collect during speed testing:

mwctl ra0 show stainfo=ap //View signal strength and negotiation information when be10000 connects to the upstream terminal

Is the problem only with the repeater connected to 6GHz Wi-Fi?

Would the problem persist if the repeater connected to 5GHz Wi-Fi?

In the same test scenario, if the BE3600 replaces the BE10000, what would the test data for the BE3600 be? (Connect to the same WiFi band)

It seems that the data after connecting to Reeater is not very reasonable. Could we obtain some comparative information?
