That is a very common case that the ISP locks the MAC address.
I’d like to give a summary.
So when you change to a new router, you need to do one of the following:
- Clone your old router’s mac address to the new router. It should just work as in this case. But if you do not want to clone mac, then,
- Just reboot your ISP modem. This works sometimes, but not always.
- Turn off the ISP modem for sometime, e.g. one hour and turn it on again. It will accept new MAC. This is our case when using Huawei modems.
- Just call your ISP and tell them you want to change router, ask them to reset the modem for you. Sometimes you need to do the method 2 and 3 as well.
- In very rare cases (e.g. we got a case about Virgin and Talktalk in the UK), you can only use the ISP router. While we don’t know exact how it works but suggest you fight with them to use new routers.
