TunnelBear OpenVPN error

Hello. I’m trying to setup OpenVPN using TunnelBear, following this: TunnelBear Befriends Penguins with Limited Linux Support

I was able to download all config files and imported to OPEL settings. After added my TunnelBear credencials, start the VPN and I get this error:

Sun Aug 6 17:12:33 2023 daemon.notice netifd: Interface ‘ovpnclient’ is setting up now Sun Aug 6 17:12:34 2023 daemon.warn ovpnclient[3231]: WARNING: --keysize is DEPRECATED and will be removed in OpenVPN 2.6 Sun Aug 6 17:12:34 2023 daemon.err ovpnclient[3231]: Options error: If you use one of --cert or --key, you must use them both Sun Aug 6 17:12:34 2023 daemon.warn ovpnclient[3231]: Use --help for more information. Sun Aug 6 17:12:34 2023 daemon.notice netifd: ovpnclient (3236): cat: can’t open ‘/tmp/run/ovpn_resolved_ip’: No such file or directory Sun Aug 6 17:12:34 2023 user.notice relay: Reloading relay due to ifup-failed of ovpnclient () Sun Aug 6 17:12:39 2023 daemon.notice netifd: Interface ‘ovpnclient’ is now down

I’m using the latest beta release 2 firmware v4.3.6.

How can I fix this? Thanks.

It seems your config file lacked the cert or key. It might be easier to help if you could redact any certs, keys, etc and post your file here.

Hello and thanks for the reply.

I’ve downloaded the default config from here: TunnelBear Befriends Penguins with Limited Linux Support

It comes as a ZIP file with a bunch of .ovpn files and a couple of certificates. I only have to add my TunnelBear credencials using the router’s UI.

I can successfully import the zip file, the problem seems to be the router’s software, as seen in the log.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot!

.ovpn files aren’t correct – can’t use cert without key, but they do. To fix this, remove lines starting with cert, and you’ll be good to go.

On a sidenote, this kind of issue suggests that this isn’t a serious VPN provider. Consider switching to a reliable vendor: Techlore | VPN Toolkit: Open-Source Comparison Chart. Also consider this graph of connections and dependencies between various VPN brands: Kumu
