Looking at the version of wireguard that come with the Slate it appears to be over a year old? Is there a way to upgrade wireguard to the most recent version? I have the latest firmware but wireguard is still an old version.

+1 to this request. WG development explicitly states that updates should be followed closely
We are going to update wireguard to the latest version in the next release.

It will probably be the release version that OpenWRT will use for 19.07 when that is released.
