Use case of a USB port and is 1GB of RAM enough?

I kind of wish both the Flint 2/3 have more RAM as I like to use blocklists and Adguard Home. Having said that, if this is one of my use cases, is 1GB enough for 10+ large blocklists? I'm already being careful with my Beryl AX as it has only 512MB.

I'm still trying to understand the use case of a USB port in a router. I know I can connect a storage device, but is that practical to share or access files? I know I can connect a cellular device. What other use cases are there?

I can't comment on AdGuard because don't use it.

I'm re-configuring my Slate AX on firmware v4.8.0-beta9 to again support FTP/S & WebDAV over TLS as a 'absolutely critical/must not lose' backup endpoint target to a USB3/SSD to/from other endpoints while travelling. The slowest part of such a set up would be the hotel's connection, anyway... & they're not going to give anyone anything close to USB3's max. theoretical cap. (5 Gbps).

I did have some fun playing around with streaming 1080p movies & mp3s over miniDLNA when I was first playing around with the older GL GUI firmware verisons a few years ago.

I would reconsider 10 large blocklists. You will likely see a diminishing return on those. I would also recommend using a separate process for dns filtering if you are going to be stressing 1gb of ram with your blocklists. Setting up pihole is really easy and will probably handle the load better, even if on an older rpi or other sbc or even docker on another system.

I understand, but how will that negatively affect me even with diminishing returns?

1Gb isn't enough.
Do you really need 10+ large blocklists?

These are the lists I'm using and I guess they are doing the job very well...

  • HaGeZi - Pro++ (Mini)
  • HaGeZi - TIF (Mini)
  • HaGeZi's - Gambling (Mini)
  • 1Hosts - Pro

I'm using "mini" because the standard lists are huge.

Guess I'll have to check how much memory they have. Thought it was 8 gb ??

Ok, I'll ask this then. Are you trying to run these from a ram disk? The ram is 1GB. The drone space is pr should be 8GB but you don't have all of either available to use.

You are already asking about more memory, that is one. It is slower to check multiple lists with sites that are unnecessary or duplicated, and it takes more storage. This is not hard - google for it.

Yes, I use a USB stick full of movies (on my Beryl AX) to watch using Kodi on my Firestick when travelling.

RAM and internal storage are two separate things.

That's a very interesting idea! Can you elaborate on how you set that up? Just dump some AAC music and MP4 videos in a folder and that's it? Which video player are you using? I'm assuming you get the video player to point to the Beryl and then you can select movies to stream?

I was using the GL GUI's 'miniDLNA' feature in conjugation with VLC to stream. @2lame would probably know more about it these days, though.

You have to load the lists into RAM to use them...

AdGuard Home consolidates all the lists into a single one, automatically removing any duplicate entries.

But this makes the initial processing take a bit longer (even when the lists update).

I use the Samba server on the Beryl Network Storage - GL.iNet Router Docs 4

Pretty much, but almost any container/codec will work.

Which video player are you using?

As I mentioned in my post, Kodi, on the Firestick, which is plugged into the hotel/apartment TV.

Does it prune out hosts in these large lists that are not being blocked?
ETA - meaning a lot of the hosts taking up memory will never be hit most likely. They are just wasting cycles and memory.

I'm not against it. I currently have 8 lists with about 842,000. Is 512MB of RAM enough for it?
