VPN to mirror my home address

Hi,

I bought a GL-XE3000 and set up Mullvad VPN in hopes that would avoid the throttling I’m getting from my Calyx internet (4G LTE). But now my apps (HBO, Amazon, ESPN) recognize I’m on a VPN and kick me out. I’ve tried several different Mullvad servers and get the same rejection messages.

I have AT&T fiber internet at a house in the city. Would it make sense to set up a VPN server on that router to make it look like I’m there? Would that solve my problem or would they somehow recognize that too?

If that’s a good plan, how do I go about it? Is it difficult to set up (I’m new at this)?

Hi

Yes, this is a very common scenario for running a home VPN server. Since the VPN endpoint is your own residential internet connection, most streaming services will treat the traffic as normal home usage rather than a commercial VPN, which often resolves location-related restrictions.

To get started, we recommend using WireGuard, as it is both efficient and relatively easy to configure. Our family VPN setup guide walks you through the entire process step by step:
