Want : Flint 3 with WiFi 7 Mesh

Want Flint 3 with WiFi 7 Mesh

Topic says it all! Would someone from gl-inet kindly explain why it was dropped?!

Being able to roam and not deal with sticky clients would be nice.

Thank you,

Hi

Unfortunately, Mesh is not yet supported on this model.

However, you may be able to achieve a similar roaming experience by using 802.11k/v/r .

  1. How to install + configure 802.11k/v/r .? This product’s web GUI does not have support.
  2. “not yet supported” What product information is published where showing when / how it will be supported?

You can find these settings in Luci. Go to Network > Wireless , click the Edit button next to your SSID, and then look for the WLAN roaming section.
Please note that while 802.11k and 802.11v should have some parameters configured by default, you will need to enable 802.11r yourself.
Be aware that 802.11r needs to be enabled following the above tutorial and configuring it via Luci may cause Wi-Fi to become disappear (no broadcast).

We don't have a specific timeline for Mesh support to share at the moment, as it's still in the early discussion phase.
However, you can see which of our products currently support Mesh Wi-Fi by using the "Mesh Wi-Fi" filter on the left side of our product list: GL.iNet Routers and Gateways Selection - GL.iNet

Thank you so much for engaging in this conversation. May I ask a few questions?

  • How sure is it that gl-inet will be bringing mesh to the Flint3 via a plain old software upgrade? And timeline for a solid Beta release?
  • OpenWRT support of WiFi7 reads as weak / poor / incomplete. Will gl-inet consider contributing its custom enhancements / features / capabilities to the main line OpenWRT trunk?
  • I read that OpenWRT has partnered with gl-inet and “Banana Pi BPI-R4 WiFi 7 Wireless Dual-Band WiFi Router Board OpenWRT, with MediaTek MT7988A (Filogic 880) SoC, Support 2X 10GbE SFP and 4X GbE Gigabit Ethernet” for gl inet to produce the hardware (and OpenWRT enhanced software) turning this into an open systems box on par with the Flint3. I hear a target date of fall 2025; however, need to replace a dead WiFi router today :frowning:
  • Also does this put gl inet in the spot of building systems for commercial sale that compete with their “mostly the same” open/free contributions?

Thank you

As we mentioned previously, the development for this feature is still in its early stages.
Because of this, the plan is subject to change, and we cannot confirm at this time whether it will be implemented.
We do not have a timeline for a Beta release, but we will be sure to announce any updates on our blog and forum.

Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi 7 drivers are provided through a closed-source SDK from Qualcomm. This prevents us from contributing the code directly to the OpenWrt mainline.

It seems you are referring to the OpenWrt TWO project.
Since this initiative is designed and managed by the OpenWrt community, we recommend consulting their forums or official channels for the most accurate information.

We are not entirely sure what you are referring to specifically, but we have always been open to collaborating with the open-source community.
Our goal is to work together to provide a better experience for all our users.
