WG on Brume

Hi everyone,

Having issues with setting up a Brume 2.
I am disappointed with this product and would not advise anyone to purchase it based on my experience and lack of available helpers.

first red flag - the brume is placed alongside all other glinet routers with regards to UI. However, the brume does not behave in the same way as a slate-ax for example so why have one page for all routers on glinet website? The settings and options on the brume need a dedicated section on how to use, setup and make best use of.

second red flag - it is not clear how to setup a brume2 on an existing network (with regards to WG). Isn’t that the purpose of the device?

Setup:

  • Asus router (main router, a real router I have to point out in comparison to the brume).
  • Connected to brume2 via WAN port.

Asus designates IP addresses. Brume 2 IP has been pinned and port forwarding has been aligned on port 51820 on my Asus.

On the Brume - port 80 is open for UDP/TCP.

I have tried creating the WG profile using DDNS and WAN IP of Asus router as the endpoint. Neither work.

From my iphone I have never been able to make a handshake connection to the brume using WG.

Time to give up and send the Brume back, I am disappointed.

Having read through this forum there are a number of people that have the same problem as me with using WG and they used Tailscale as a solution. However, tailscale is in beta mode and hasnt been fully developed so I am also cautious of using this protocol.

Is there an expected release date for a final tailscale candidate that is safe and secure and that will be integrated with brume?

Why is it that when I go to update my firmware manually to 4.7.4 - that my brume tells me its older software, even though its currently running 4.7.13? Why does the brume then become unusable and inaccessible after manual update to 4.7.4?

However, tailscale is in beta mode and hasnt been fully developed so I am also cautious of using this protocol.

Tailscale is just a management toolset wrapping around the same wireguard protocol.

The only thing that’s beta is the integration with the Gl.inet UI and config options there. Tailscale itself is very stable and works reliably on OpenWRT and has done for some time and many users using it with Gl.inet devices.

They do fit slightly different use-cases so it depends exactly what you are trying to achieve but for many uses Tailscale is the simpler and more flexible option and highly recommended.

Because 13 > 4? That is why, 4.7.13 is a higher version than 4.7.4. The difference, if you are putting the Brume behind your other router, is that you should plug the WAN into the DMZ or LAN side of your router. You will need to allow external access to http(s) and ssh. You will also need some firewall rules set up to allow yoyo-ing of traffic in and out of the same physical interface. It has been a while since I had my Brume2 hooked up, but I did not find the interface to be terribly different than any other GL router. But, if you are comparing 4.7.x to 4.8.x, yes, there are some differences but not night and day imo.
