AdGuard Home and WireGuard DNS issues on GL-AXT1800

I am experiencing what appears to be an issue involving AdGuard Home and the WireGuard client on my GL-AXT1800.

The problem is intermittent, but I have found a way to reproduce it consistently.

The router normally works as expected. WireGuard connects successfully, Internet access is available, and DNS resolution works through AdGuard Home.

However, DNS occasionally stops working under the following conditions:

  • Sometimes after a normal router boot or power cycle.

  • Consistently after applying changes in AdGuard Home or restarting the AdGuard Home service.

When the issue occurs, the WireGuard tunnel remains connected and Internet connectivity itself is still working. The router can reach external IP addresses and the WireGuard client shows an active handshake, but DNS resolution fails for all LAN clients.

I verified that public DNS servers remain reachable directly from the router, which suggests that routing and Internet connectivity are not the root cause.

One additional symptom is that the "Test Upstream DNS Servers" function inside AdGuard Home reports errors, even when DNS resolution appears to be working normally and the query log shows successful DNS requests being processed.

The most reliable workaround I have found is disconnecting and reconnecting the WireGuard client. As soon as the WireGuard tunnel reconnects, DNS resolution immediately starts working again for all devices without any other changes.

Current behavior:

  1. Router boots normally or AdGuard Home is restarted.

  2. WireGuard client connects successfully.

  3. DNS resolution fails.

  4. Disconnect and reconnect the WireGuard client.

  5. DNS resolution immediately starts working again.

During troubleshooting I also noticed several firewall and VPN-related warnings in the logs when AdGuard Home restarts, which makes me suspect there may be an issue with the interaction between AdGuard Home, WireGuard, and the GL.iNet DNS integration.

could you please try to update AdGuard Home using Script: Update AdGuard Home and check if the issue persist?

Hi, wanted to share my experience on the GL-E5800 (Mudi 7), Firmware 0805release (v4.8.5).

Before the AGH update: AGH 0.107.56 + WireGuard (Policy Mode, 192.168.223.0/24) worked fine together. The only minor issue was that blocklist updates failed when the WireGuard tunnel was active — workaround was simply to disable WireGuard, update the lists, then re-enable. Perfectly acceptable.

After running the admon AGH update script (0.107.56 → 0.107.77): AGH and WireGuard can no longer run simultaneously — internet access stops completely. Factory reset + backup restore was required to recover.

After restoring 0.107.56: Back to normal. WireGuard + AGH work fine together again.

Conclusion: the AGH 0.107.77 update via the admon script breaks WireGuard coexistence on the Mudi 7. Do not update AGH if you rely on WireGuard + AdGuard Home together. Happy to provide logs if helpful.
