Adguard Home: Select upstream DNS for specific client?

Hi,
in one of my contexts this is a 'must": Using Adguard Home, but a client as VoiP-TK needs a given dns server from broadband provider. Only this will resolve correct its SIP-names.

Is there a way, GL-inet router (or Adguard Home) does this job?

Since Adguard Home is a 3rd party product, it might or might not fulfill this job - and there might be even the possibility that this featureset will change.

Since DNS is pretty easy, this is not a big deal.
But I would like to warn you at the same time: manual effort is required.

The most easiest way: The phone system will use the ISPs DNS, so static IP configuration.

Thanks!

Was my first thought. But possible trouble, if provider changes IPs behind domains (and: normally not informing customers about this). But, of course, a deal.

Maybe setting this special dns server to the list of upstream servers inside Adguard Home, so if no success first …

Won’t really work since you can’t choose which upstream DNS should be used. (Not for each device.)

But spoken for static IPs: You can simply set the DNS of your ISP there. They don’t change. At least not so often that you should be worried about it.

Yes, that is to be expected. :slightly_smiling_face:

in AdGuard
Settings/Client Settings/edit client button (or add it for first time)/uncheck all protections/Upstream DNS servers - here enter ISP DNS server

or manually setup DNS servers on the device

This will only be true if you choose to let Adguard Home handle all DNS requests:

This will disable VPN policies. Depends on your needs if it’s a good solution.

or if you’ll setup the firewall properly in luci (without breaking VPN policies).

that option in glinet gui adds this firewall rule but breaks vpn policies

Hi,
thanks to you both! I’ll give this a try. Could be fine, because this scenario should also work, when Adguard Home is (tempor.) disabled: switched off, clients get providers (needed) dns server, switched on, voip-client will also go.

of course you can tweak it more to your needs from luci. glinet gui is just some polished gui but nothing more. luci will do a lot more, or cli

myself i prefer to have vpn policies setup on individual devices rather than on domains… in fact you don’t always need vpn and not for every device in your home so easier to have vpn policies based on clients/devices

Oh yes, powerful. I know. And also easy to crashing configuration :upside_down_face:
But in principle you are completely right.

easy to crash? sure  always do a backup before making changes
