Is adguard on gl-inet just a joke, did the developers forget to update or is there a way to update it?
The latest version on my GL-A1300 is Version: v0.107.26 which according to Versions history | AdGuard it's from March 9, 2023, I have lots of bugs / performance issues with it and no wonder why the version could be the main issue.
It's usually not a good way to start threads by offending people 
The release cycle of GL firmware is different from the 3rd party software, that's why it is not always up-to-date. Feel free to upgrade AGH by yourself or by using [Script] Update AdGuard Home
1y behind updates introduces many security risks that no one wants to have, as gl-inet is based on openwrt, the update and installation process are just 2 commands.
You are right for installing and upgrading, but not for testing.
But I guess GL will try to be more up-to-date for 3rd party packages in future.
