I have the "GL-AXT1800 Slate AX". Is there any way that I can back up my configuration for easy restore? If so, how can I do that, I have not found anything in the ui.
Further, any way to backup the configuration of addons like Adguard? Is that separate per app, or part of the one backup?

I call it 'make profiles with different configurations', and such a feature does not exists at the moment. But you could do a simple backup/restore at OpenWrt level with LuCI. It is discussed with its up and downs more than once for different models. just search the forum: Search results for 'backup' - GL.iNet
I am also wondering if there will be a backup configuration option on this unit from main UI. I am on 4.6.11 firmware version and I do not see such option. Was this added to 4.7.0 RC that it is available? I read that there is backup option in LuCI. Is this just for LuCI? or it is a general backup which also backup GL front end settings? Are they different? I am not sure.

Just login to the LUCI interface and backup your config from there...GL.inet has had this asked before and they didn't have any interest in integrating it into the GL.inet interface as you can easily just go to the LUCI interface and backup (save) your config in LUCI...Then if you need to restore your config (if something happened) then you just go into the LUCI interface and do a restore and select your saved config and it will be restored. I guess their reasoning is that there's no reason to integrate it into the gl.inet interface since the capability already exists in the LUCI interface...I've used it many times on my Flint 1 and Flint 2 routers without fail. The saved config will restore your settings to both the LUCI interface as well as the GL.inet interface. (It's the same folder locations).
