Best combo for home VPN setup

Let’s say I have these 3 VPN routers:

  • GL-MT300N-V2 / Mango
  • GL-MT1300 / Beryl
  • GL-SFT1200 / Opal

Which one should I use as a VPN server on my home network and which one should I use as a travel router?

My main use case is to connect to my home VPN from my work laptop when traveling.

My current home internet plan speed is pretty modest - 100/5. So I understand my home VPN download speed will be limited to 5. I may upgrade my plan in future.

With only 5Mb up, there is no reason not to use the Mango as your home server as with OpenVPN or Wireguard it runs faster then 5Mb. I would take the Beryl with you, as it is faster and is based on a much newer OpenWrt firmware version then the Opel, but you may want to bring both, so you have a backup.

I’m currently use a AR300m, which is similar to the Mango, for my Wireguard server that is located at a family members house and a AR750s as my main travel router. I can get up to 40Mb/sec over Wireguard using this setup.

When using as VPN server, wifi is not important. So just use Mango.

When travel, dual-band wifi is very important. Choose dual band router.
