Best Wifi settings with accesspoint

Hi,

I'm planning to install a Flint2 as my main router, and on the other side of my house my older Flint1 as accesspoint. I want my devices to be able to roam, so SSID’s will be same on both routers.

Any suggestions for the best wifi-settings on both routers (both operating in 2G and 5G).

Thanks in advance!

Flash OpenWrt on both, set same settings, enable 802.11k/v/r and install usteer

Thanks for helping. But wanna keep original 4.8.3 firmware. Not OpenWRT.

Hi,

For this setup, please configure the Flint1 as AP mode and keep Flint 2 as the main router.

  1. Log in to the Flint 1 admin page, Set the same SSID, Wi-Fi password as Flint 2.
  2. Connect Flint 2 LAN port -> Flint 1 WAN port, go to Network Setting -> Network Mode and change it to Access Point.

If you need 802.11r, Flint1 with original 4.x firmware can support 802.11r in LuCI.
For Flint 2, the original stable firmware does not support 802.11r, so you need use the v4.8.3-op24 firmware.

After that, you can enable 802.11r on both Flint1 and Flint2 from the same LuCI path.
The path is LuCI -> Network -> Wireless -> Edit SSID -> WLAN Roaming -> enable 802.11r and save.

Thanks Charles for your clear and friendly answer.

Does the 4.8.3.OP24 firmware reduce my radio on 5G and 2G, as discussed in other threads?

Hi,

The 4.8.3 and 4.8.3-op24 firmware use different driver branches, so the actual Wi-Fi performance may be different.
You can back up your current settings then upgrade to 4.8.3-op24 and test it in your own environment.
If it does not meet your expectations, you can roll back to the firmware version you prefer.
