BETA firmware version openwrt-4.6.4-0903 no longer available

Any particular reason why the BETA firmware version openwrt-4.6.4-0903 was pulled as quickly as it was introduced to the MT6000 and other devices (not on MT3000 although was advertised as such)? It seems to have introduced a lot of fixes as far as the changelog was concerned.

Still there yesterday. Gone again today. I have downloaded it but not installed it yet. It would be interesting to know what's going on with it.

They probably saw a significant bug that needs squashing thats why they pulled it out for a while. This happened several times now.

Would be nice to get some official clarification to see if we can try it or not (at least for those of us who have downloaded it). Interesting also to see that it is now showing up for the MT3000 (with the improvement list showing: "Updated WiFi driver(MT3000)") but still unavailable for the other models.

It's a beta. Beta means that it might get pulled or not.

So I don't see why they need to clarify. Maybe GL should rename beta to "Preview" or something, so it is more clear that it's completely without support and might harm data as well.

though I rather wish they made 'beta' more as a pre release candidate for when they start adding bigger features, and snapshot for something they can pull

and if it happens it got pulled as beta that just the DL button gets disabled but the log is still exists with a text why it was pulled, that will look much more responsible because you don't want someone trying that firmware if it was really that wrong or was harmfull.

now a user has no version control nor a checksum it just disappeared...

And what about those who might have downloaded and already installed it? Do they not deserve to know what harm might they be causing? It is highly arrogant for anyone to suggest that there is no need to clarify a thing when they are asking for their users to beta test the firmware. What a ****head!

Well, you are right on one hand side - on the other hand side it is like with all beta versions.
They are for testing, but not productive usage. So if you decide you want to test in prod, it's up to you.

Apple, for example, tells about the beta program:

Only install the beta software on devices that are not used for production purposes and are therefore not business-critical. We strongly advise you to install the beta software on a second system or second device or, in the case of a Mac, on a second partition.

I can see that there has to be a balancing act between “People like testing for GL” and “GL doesn't provide support for this”

Maybe @bruce knows why the firmware was pulled?

4.6.4 Beta is still available for Beryl AX and the changelog says it's also compatible with Flint 2:

Flint 2, latest is 4.6.2

New beta is out

Dear all,

I think there is some ambiguity or misunderstanding of the ‘beta’ 'preview' meaning.
The beta and preview are close, means the firmware will add some new features (new codes), so there are inevitably some introduced bugs or undiscovered bugs, beta firmware won't do full regression testing (stable will do).
All beta firmwares are very not recommended to use on production devices, just for new feature test.

Can we expect an Op24 counterpart for this new 4.6.4? Theres important updates on the drivers from Openwrt recently. Thanks!

Im fine if op24 is delayed a little more😉, currently there is a big change to netifd and this issue

and now seeing it also involves mt76 commits a little.

Currently i run my own raw openwrt which i compile with the change from hnyman but im not on the most recent mt76 commit which is newer.

Thanks for that @bruce. The only massive caveat here is that there is a very good body of opinion on these fora to suggest that a lot of your 'beta' firmware versions actually runs much better than your stable releases which is one reason why some users like myself are quite keen on trying these as soon as they come out. The great enthusiasm here about the OpWRT24 versions is a great example of how your experimental versions can be far more superior than the "so called stable" versions of firmware.

There are two 4.6.4 Beta available:

One from 4th of September: GL.iNet download center
Another from 5th of September: GL.iNet download center

They are both to models: GL-AX1800, GL-AXT1800, GL-MT2500/GL-MT2500A, GL-MT3000, GL-MT6000.

By the way, your website was too unstable one hour ago...

understood, personally i can't wait for the flint 3 so then I can start to test the firmware again and make sure it works for my use cases

Up and running (testing) on the little router that COULD...The Flint 1...Using today's re-released 4.64 RC...A great little router I'm now using only as a backup for my Flint 2.
Flint 1 really deserves a place in the GL.inet Hall of Fame.

Another confirmation that the Beta is often better than the Stable which has been my general experience with this 'overall experimental enterprise' with so many GL.iNET devices over several years now.

4.6.4-op should take a few more days and is currently being tested

Can you tell us what driver update you mentioned?
thank you
