Need Clarification: Can GL-MV1000 (Brume) Flash OpenWrt Directly via Web UI? + eMMC Usage

Post Body:
Hello GL.iNet team,

I noticed some conflicting information regarding OpenWrt installation methods for the GL-MV1000 (Brume):

  1. The OpenWrt wiki's general GL.iNet page suggests that all GL.iNet devices can flash OpenWrt directly through the GL.iNet web interface (Upgrade > Local Upgrade).

https://openwrt.org/toh/gl.inet/installation

  1. However, the specific OpenWrt wiki page for the GL-MV1000 (Brume) only mentions the uboot method for flashing OpenWrt, with no mention of direct web UI flashing.

https://openwrt.org/toh/gl.inet/gl-mv1000

Could you please clarify:

  • Is it safe to flash OpenWrt directly through the GL.iNet web interface on the Brume?
  • Or should we strictly follow the uboot method described in the Brume's specific wiki page?
  • After successful OpenWrt installation, how can I properly utilize the 8GB eMMC storage? The wiki mentions using block detect | uci import fstab but I'd appreciate confirmation of the correct procedure.

I want to be absolutely certain about the correct methods to avoid bricking my device and to make full use of its storage capabilities. Thank you for your help!

Best regards

It's only safe to flash via luci as long as there is an sysupgrade image available.
If you want to use the factory one, you need to go by Uboot - and you might not be able to flash GL firmware anymore.

Is it safe?
Well, depends. It's not the official firmware so it's more or less out of warranty for whatever will happen.

hi, the answers make it complex.

can i simply ask:

i am on brumeW with official GL inet firmware 3.218,

i deadly want the openwrt 23.05 but want a safe install.

what is the way to do?

ps: foss is like that, not every document is uptodate.

the "gl inet products" page say upload to luci is ok IN GENERAL.
there is both "factory" and "sysupgrade" image on the device specific page.
https://openwrt.org/toh/gl.inet/gl-mv1000

but the device specific page only show uboot method.

using luci is easier
i want a safe, less change to brick method.

thanks

i am not sure what the sysupgrade image is for,
can it upgrade from GL inet firmware to openwrt? or only openwrt to openwrt?

by the "in general" page, it implies can.
i dont know, i dont know. thanks

finally: looks like i have to do the uboot method. thanks

Sysupgrade is the one you can use for upgrading using luci.
