I have a European EZVIZ EP7 video doorphone. The outdoor unit and indoor monitor communicate using IEEE 802.11ah Wi-Fi HaLow, operating at 865–867 MHz with a 2 MHz channel width.
The direct link works, but the signal is weak because of distance and several obstacles. I cannot move either of the original EZVIZ devices, so I would like to place a Wi-Fi HaLow relay/extender midway between them.
I am considering using a Morse Micro HaLowLink 2 EU.
EZVIZ describes the connection as “AP pairing”, but I do not yet know whether the association/security method is fully standard Wi-Fi HaLow or whether EZVIZ uses some proprietary pairing mechanism.
My questions are:
If the original EZVIZ HaLow AP does not support WDS/4-address, could HaLowLink 2 still relay the link using relayd, proxy bridge, Layer-2/Layer-2.5 bridge, NAT, or another OpenWrt method?
Would one HaLowLink 2 EU be enough, or would two HaLow radios/devices be required?
If I can obtain the original SSID, channel and security credentials, could HaLowLink 2 associate with the EZVIZ HaLow AP and extend the connection?
If EZVIZ does not provide the SSID or security credentials, or if the SSID is hidden, is there any practical way to achieve the same result without knowing them? Could HaLowLink 2 work as a transparent relay/bridge without those credentials?
Can HaLowLink 2 scan or sniff the existing HaLow link to identify the channel, SSID and authentication/security method without associating with it?
If the initial EZVIZ pairing is proprietary but the traffic afterward uses standard 802.11ah frames, could a transparent proxy/relay/bridge still be possible without modifying either original EZVIZ device?
I am not trying to extend normal 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi. I specifically need to improve the existing 802.11ah HaLow link between two third-party devices.
Any advice on the most practical architecture would be greatly appreciated.
We are currently developing new halow wifi products. Among the new products,
- halow wifi supports Repeater (NAT), Extender (relay), WDS (layer 2 bridge)
- I think one unit can meet the needs
- You need to obtain the SSID and security credentials to successfully connect;
- HaLowLink2 does not support connecting to hidden halow wifi, and you must know the security credentials (not required if EZVIZ’s Halow AP encryption method is OPEN)
- HaLowLink2 can scan the current HaLow link and identify the channel, SSID and authentication/security method without association, but the GUI will only display the scanned SSID;
- EZVIZ needs to use standard 802.11ah frames for normal connection and communication.
