I have a Slate 7, plugging in a Sandisk Extreme (the old version, not the pro) via the cable that came with the SSD to the USB A port on the router. I’ve tried powering it with multiple charger blocks (a 40W then a 100W on USB C PD that negotiated to 12V per the block’s display) and plugging it directly into 110V AC in the wall, but cannot get it to reliably mount the drive. I’ve formatted the drive to Ext4 to reduce the load on the router’s CPU but no luck. Is this a lost cause and, if so, any suggestions as to an SSD that will work? Or do I need to get something other than the Slate 7? This setup is eventually going into a vehicle on a 150W 110AC line so I should have plenty of power for whatever will work. Thanks for any help.

According to the Slate 7 hardware specification, the USB 3.0 port supports a maximum output current of 1.5A.
If the connected SSD requires more power than the USB port can provide, we recommend using a powered USB hub with an external power supply.
Thanks! This specific SSD is only supposed to pull 1.1A under heavy load but I’ve read in a few places that people have measured up to 1.5A. As I’m writing massive files to it, I’m guessing its dropping and remounting due to the current. Thanks for the info, I’ll switch to a micro SD which should pull much less.
