Cannot connect to hotel Wifi with new Beryl AX - IOS devices work fine

Have a new Beryl AX and am staying at a hotel. Although both of my apple devices can connect to it directly very easily without even a captive portal, this Beryl AX cannot. I changed MAC so the gl-inet looked more like an apple device (last two digits different to avoid a duplicate) but that doesn’t help. I will be at this hotel for two more days if anybody has any ideas. I don’t know exactly what to paste, since I don’t see a clear error in log…. so I grabbed some log and pasted it here. It seems like some messages hint at a kind of timeout but my ipad and iphone have no such issue…and I don’t know where I can adjust any timeout on this gl-inet device.

What version of the firmware? I would try 4.2.1 or the last snapshot

4.2.0 since it is the latest stable build. I will try 4.2.1 and let you know.

Thanks razor - 4.2.1 BETA did indeed allow me to connect to the two hotel networks I could not connect to before.

The downside is this 4.2.1 BETA seems to be very unstable. Only a couple minutes go by and then the Beryl AX WiFi drops and restarts for some reason. Sophie’s choice!

Did you keep the settings when upgrading?
If you didn’t kept settings, I suggest you try the snapshot version

Razor, I did keep settings.

I just loaded 4.2.0 compile date 3/21, the snapshot version. This seems to be the best so far. It both allows me to connect AND it is lasting more than a few minutes so far. I will continue testing tonight and report back in a couple hours.

The snapshot 4.2.0 compile date 3/21 seems to be the best option so far but it is not perfect. It lasts maybe 15-30 minutes at a time and then the Wifi on Beryl AX drops and restarts. Gl-inet has a ways to go before this is a quality project. I may have to travel with my Slate for a few months until they get this under control.

I am not sure if the Hotel wifi is contributing to it but I can say that my iPhone and iPad work fine on the Hotel wifi network when the Beryl AX is not in the mix.

FWIW… I too have been experiencing a lot of problems with the Beryl AX w/wifi, connecting to hotels (with and without a captive portal), and with repeater mode. I agree that GL-inet needs to improve the software for this device. And like you, I’m leaving my new Beryl AX at home and traveling with my Slate AX until the Beryl gets a lot better. Hate to say I regret buying the Beryl, but at this point I do.

Can you give me your latest log? Need to understand is it 2.4G or 5G and which channel etc.

@alzhao , sure. Hopefully I have the right log. My results are inconsistent. This morning when I try it the Beryl AX stays indefinitely with “ The interface is connected, but the Internet can’t be accessed.”. My ipad and iphone both take a while to connect to the same hotel network and say no internet for 30+ seconds but then eventually work and are stable whereas Beryl AX just stays forever with that message about internet can’t be accessed.
kernel.zip (17.6 KB)

@alzhao here it is again using the second hotel wifi name (also works ok on iphone/ipad). This time I did zip of whole logread folder, maybe it is better.
logread.zip (32.5 KB)

MWAN3 is enabled by default try disabling internet status checking in the Multi-wan settings or changing some of the settings.

Is Multi-cast version enabled?

Do you have a log that is longer then 4 minutes?
Last two entries are:
Tue Mar 21 20:15:37 2023 user.info mwan3track[15686]: Lost 14 ping(s) on interface wwan (apcli0)
Tue Mar 21 20:17:32 2023 user.info mwan3track[15686]: Lost 32 ping(s) on interface wwan (apcli0)

@K3rn3l_Ku5h Sure, here is a much longer log where I just let it sit for a while.
logread 2.zip (33.4 KB)

I disabled that internet tracking status in multiwan settings, and it got rid of the “internet cannot be accessed” warning, but the internet could not actually be accessed.

I am leaving the hotel to work today so will be many hours before I can try again.

I’ve used my Beryl AX at 3 hotels so far. I have to remember to turn off Adguard Home to get an IP and move past the captive portal. Then turn it back on. Works great. I connect to the hotel’s 5G signal and use 2.4G to my devices.
Firmware 4.2.1 release 1.

@RBzee I do not have Adguard Home enabled, and this hotel has no captive portal.

I think the hotel is using multi-cast or Broadcast Domain not sure what version. Try enabling IGMP Snooping version 3 if it doesn’t work try version 2.

This explains why the router doesn’t work but other devices do.

Basically your router is stopping the Broadcast of DHCP( Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and ARP(address resolution protocol)

Here is a 30min video CCNA if you want to make your head hurt explaining it. The hotel Has bunch of switches, hubs, access points being used all with there own IP address and subnets

Tried both IGMP snooping version 3 and verison 2. No improvement. IOS devices natively connect without issue, Beryl AX is a mess with snapshot, Beta, and released versions of the code as of this date.

Drury hotel - both of the two Wifi options available - at 1205 S Price Rd, Chandler, AZ 85286 in case anybody else would ever like to give it a shot. My time testing the Beryl AX at this location is probably up unless somebody has a miracle cure between now and the time I wake up.

Do you have vpn enabled on your apple devices?

VPN will block the portal if you use the router. But it does not block the portal if you connect directly to the portal wifi.

@danull
Could you PING the gateway in your Beryl AX?
