Chinese Company Privacy

Ive heard that flashing the gl.inet Beryl ax GL-MT3000 with Vanilla openwrt is a way to ensure that there is more privacy versus whatever the Chinese manufacturer has already installed. I really don’t have networking knowledge, so this is honestly too complex for me. If I install a vpn, would this keep my information private from the manufacturer of the router?

Sounds like you are mixing some information, without understanding. This is more dangerous (in case of security) than any Chinese company.

If you are setup your own plain OpenWrt without knowing how it works, you are able to configure anything, just as you want to. Nobody will hold you back from set up nonsense firewall forwarding rules, use blowfish as VPN cipher, use insecure or default passwords … good luck with your feelers and independent ‘security’.

On the other hand, GL.iNet provides us a solid hardware platform, a OpenWrt (not the latest) base and on top a user-friendly front-end wich provides proven defaults and at docs.gl-inet.com well documented options if the default does not fit your needs. In last instance an open dialogue of issues here in the forum or at discord.

I have a little networking knowledge. I will use a Flint 2 as ISP endpoint, a Beryl for my garden and a Beryl AX for my multimedia setup in future. All Plain OpenWrt, because the GP.iNet does not provide enough VLAN and mesh …

On the other hand I am ‘administrator’ for family and friends. Most of them got at least one GL.iNet router with GL.iNet admin panel. Because if there is any issue, I can walkthrough via phone, if I am not online. 80% of the issues are solved within 10 minutes, 5% are unrecognised Internet outrages.

A lot of people, with much more knowledge as you and me combined are using and testing GL.iNet every day. As far as I know without real privacy issues. The opposite, if there is a security concern, they'll help to investigate it.
