I have Comet, Comet POE and Comet Pro and when the Comet 5G was announced was keen to add it to my collection thinking this would be the Swiss army knife of IP KVM’s one box to rule them all however when the preorder was live not able to press the preorder button.
The reason was due to this note:
“The AP Mode connection is for device management only and does not provide an internet connection to the client device.”
Have I interpreted this note wrong, is AP mode supported ?
Redcap modem has a theoretical peak data rate is up to 223 Mbps so even at half that is usable as temporary AP for service laptop download a firmware, bios for the client machine or even a basic travel AP.
I'm wondering if it would be possible to expose an Ethernet interface via the USB composite device so at least the host would have Internet access. Personally I'd rather look into a more network-oriented solution (a 5G router, or a satellite backup solution) that's transparent to my entire infrastructure, but the Comet 5G fans may only have a small number of devices that need extra reliability for Internet access.
The product is not designed for router use. For example, as a KVM product, we've specifically optimized its uplink bandwidth, but if used as a router, its downlink speed should be optimized. Furthermore, using it as a router requires additional software functionality, which significantly increases the product's potential for failure. As a product designed for unattended scenarios, we aim to minimize these potential failure points.
