Confusing firmware versions Flint 2 (GL-MT6000)

Hi,

I am still using firmware version 4.5.6, which still uses OpenWRT 23.05

At some point GL iNet downgraded the OpenWRT version to 21.02. Making the router more stable, but also loosing some of the features like 2.5Gbit lan and fast roaming.

Now I see different firmware versions, but not really clear which OpenWRT version they are using.

  • I can upgrade to 4.5.8, this still uses OpenWRT 21.02 ?
  • I also see a Beta 4.6.0, that uses OpenWRT version ?
  • I also see 4.6.0-op24, guessing this is OpenWRT 24?
    • If I check OpenWRT, latest version is OpenWrt 23.05.3
  • Then I also see 4.5.6-op23, which uses OpenWRT 23.05.x, I guess I am on this version?

So I am a bit confused what is what. I would like to stay on OpenWRT 23.05. Should I wait, or upgrade to version.....

Correct, it still uses OpenWRT 21.02.

It also uses 21.02.

Yes, 4.6.0-op24 is based a recent snapshot of OpenWRT which will eventually be 24.

OpenWRT 25.05.3 is the latest stable version. However GL-MT6000 was a late addition to 25.03 and many improvements have been made since the release of the stable version to the wireless drivers, kernel, and linux wireless subsystem. This is presumably why GL iNet has chosen, for their return to OpenWRT with open-source drivers, to use the latest snapshot rather than stable.

Note: The latest OpenWRT snapshot is more stable than it sounds.

The only 4.5.6 for GL-MT6000 I know is based on OpenWRT 23.05.x, so I believe you are also correct here.

If you are pleased with 4.5.6, you could wait for a while. That is your only option is you want to stay on OpenWRT 23.05.

Since you don't want to go back to a version based on 21.02, 4.6.0-op24 will be your future update path, perhaps when it has had a little more time in the oven (although many are quite pleased with it already).

OpenWrt Snapshot (op24) is the one comes with updated WiFi driver for MT6000.

So either use op24 or stable.
Don't use the old one comes with openwrt2305

Replies are very much appreciated, this makes it a lot more clear.
So for OpenWRT 23.05 is the stable version and 24.x is the upcoming version, but gliNet has started using it. So there are 2 firmware 4.5.6 versions, one using OpenWRT 21.x and the other 24.x

I wonder why gliNet is still building on 4.5.6 using OpenWRT 21.x, you would expect all affords going to the latest OpenWRT version. But I guess things aren't as simple as that.

Once the op 24 firmware is proven to work perfectly we will only maintain this version.

Typo. You mean 23.05 not 25.05
