Hi
I’m in the UK and looking for a product that will allow a wifi link between 2 Windows 10/11 PCs but I don’t require internet access, and would rather keep it separate from my usual internet router anyway, if possible. One PC will be indoors, the other outside at least 15 metres away and potentially up to about 30-40 metres away (100-120 feet). Also, it should be in line of sight. I plan to use Remote Desktop from indoors to control the outside mini PC. The outside PC will be a MEle mini Quieter 4C and battery operated. It won’t be a fixed setup but needs to be fairly easy to make the connection when needed. One of the GL iNet travel routers looks like they would have the functionality but I suspect would not have the range? I don’t need super high speed, just a reasonable one! Around 70 Mbps would do and I need to limit the power requirement for the outside PC because of the battery operation.
Any advice or recommendations would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Louise
The main problem will be that nobody can tell you whether the range is sufficient. If the router is indoors, I would say that the range will cause problems depending on how thick the walls or glass are. And how many trees, the weather, the moon and sun… (and the antenna of the devices itself)
It would be best if the router was in the centre … but that would be in the middle of the garden. You will have to test whether the travel router is sufficient here. If you’re lucky yes, if you’re unlucky no. As always in life…
Hi
Thanks for the reply. The indoor side could be at an open window so it could be line of sight with nothing in between. There must be data that can give an indication of the likely useable range of a particular device? I’m assuming I would need two devices - one at each end? There used to be the possibility of setting up an ‘ad hoc’ network in Windows but that appears to no longer be an option. Ignoring the range issue for the moment, what would I need to set up the standalone wifi connection - a wifi router at each end?
Thanks
Louise
If your device in the garden does not offer Wi-Fi, then you need a Wi-Fi router at each end, correct.
Beryl or Opal could be sufficient for that.
Both devices have wifi but I’d still need the two routers to set up the independent network?
At least one, because in Windows 11 Wi-Fi Ad-Hoc was removed.
As I said, ad hoc is not in Windows 10 either. So that would be two routers?
1 Router is enough as long as both can reach the Wi-Fi of it.
If they can’t it’s even a question if 2 routers can reach each other - mostly yes, but nobody knows.
If anyone on here has any experience of useable range of travel routers, I’d love to hear!
Thanks

My suggestion travel router and USB dongle for mobile network
Thanks for your suggestion but I don’t quite understand. I don’t think a usb dongle would have a range of 30-40 metres?
Louise
I think you can just try.
70 meters in open area is fine for the router and wifi dongles.
I think it depends on how configured? Do you mean router indoors and wifi dongle remote? My wifi signal isn’t great between my current router on 2nd floor and outside on the ground floor and more than a few meters away. I’m thinking of getting a Flint 2 router and a portable Beryl AX at the 30-40 meters remote end.
Thanks
Louise
Indoor 30-40 meters aways is too far. Outdoor no problem.
Hi
I’m wanting to control something (a telescope and two cameras) remotely via remote desktop (and separate from the internet) from indoors to outdoors, maybe up to 30m away and acquire live images. Possibly also via a smartphone, but that just outside. Anyway, the Beryl AX and Flint 2 will be delivered today. It should be straightforward to set it all up - the mini PC first, then the network (a couple of days with fiddling). I’ll try it just indoors first and then outdoors - when the weather is better!
Louise
Are you able to set up?
Hi
Thanks for asking! I’ve setup the BerylAX but I’m stuck with a technical problem with the mini PC. I hope to be able to resolve that soon! Hopefully, I’ll be able to test the mini PC and BerylAX, and outside, this week - if the rain keeps away! I will post an update when I get to that stage!
Cheers
Louise
Even if this is behind of scope, maybe you want to share the issue here anyway?
Oh, it’s just that Samsung Magician wouldn’t install properly onto the Mele. But I’m just now downloading the Win 11 to install from a usb drive.

FWIW I managed to get the two PC’s talking via wi-fi with the Beryl AX at the remote end and the local Flint 2, and no internet connection (though it’s still optional, of course!). Also able to set up and run Remote Desktop. I’ve not checked distance yet but at least the comms are there! I should be able to run the remote mini pc without a keyboard/screen (have removed password), just by switching it and the Beryl AX on…
