Connected / No Internet Access

This started last night and I have no idea what's going on. On my Google Pixel, the two SSIDs from the Beryl AX are showing no Internet access. When the Pixel is connected, it just says connected. The weird thing is that I do have Internet access when I use a VPN app to connect. Last night, instead of showing no Internet access, it just said limited Internet access. About an hour ago, my Samsung Tizen TV also lost wireless Internet access. The Apple TV that is connected to the Beryl AX just like my Google Pixel has Internet access when it's using its own VPN. So I thought maybe it's the VPN in the Beryl AX that's having its issues, but disabling it doesn't fix anything.

Here is a partial log because there are character limits in a post.

What's going on?

Looks like ipv6 is not working, is your network supporting ipv6 also on the wan side?

Otherwise disable ipv6 in gl ui, but also in adguardhome.

Something here causes the dhcp to restart due to ipv6 not responding within adguardhome.

Also:

oom-kill:constraint=CONSTRAINT_NONE,nodemask=(null),cpuset=/,mems_allowed=0,global_oom,task_memcg=/,task=AdGuardHome,pid=32

Means router runs out of memory, you have too huge lists for the router to work properly.

I did not enable or fiddle with any IPv6 settings. How do I disable IPv6 in the GUI and in AGH?

Is the partial log enough to give you an idea of what is causing the problem?

I'll go and remove some lists.

I just removed all the block lists and it saw an IPv6 tab, which was already disabled. Doesn't work. I'm now starting to think it's ControlD.

Well, first lets see what it does with the lists.

Maybe the ipv6 timeout error was because of the OOM kill.

I'm not known with the Controld feature, is it a gl feature or did you install the cli?

I guess you cannot run adgh with this standalone controld cli, my guess is that they both replace the resolv.conf or the dnsmasq config as init file.

ControlD is a DNS service I'm paying for. I think I've solved the problem, but I still don't know what caused it to begin with.

Did the log give you the information you needed to see what's the culprit?

What I did to solve the problem was to remove all the blocklists. I removed all of the upstream DNS servers. Then I disabled AdGuard Home. I also took this chance to connect the Samsung Tizen TV directly to the Beryl AX's LAN port. I rebooted the Beryl AX. Things are working again.

The funny thing is that despite deleting the upstream DNS servers and disabling AGH, as soon as I reenabled it, I see Quad 9 appearing in the upstream DNS server. How does that happen?

What would help is if I could figure out what caused the problem to begin with.

Nah, as you said, that's just a partial log. You'd have to 'export' the 'logread.tar' or paste that one log you've partially posted into a text file, then zip/tar it for an attachment to a post here.

It 'sounds' like Quad9 might be the default AGH upstream DNS resolver. It wouldn't surprise me as Quad9 has malware filtering lists by default.

You have to go out of your way not to use filtering. That would seem to be against the concept of AGH.

I'm still speculating, though.

I don't remember seeing anything but an empty list the very first time I opened the Beryl AX and set up AGH. The good news is that the Quad9 entry is the DoH version. It's just odd that I can't completely empty out the upstream DNS list. I just deleted ControlD, saved it, and it's blank. As soon as I close the browser and then relog into the Beryl, go to AGH, and Quad9 is there again. Very weird.

@bruce and @will.qiu, do you guys have any idea of what is going on?

< chuckle > How do you expect AGH to get ya out to the WAN without some upstream DNS provider to put the packets?

Try dropping in Cloudflare's DOH & see what the latency is like for your tastes... but as I said, beware they hold logs.

Before I even started using Cloudflare, I followed someone's advice here to use it. Privacy and security are very important to me. I was just going to create a new thread to ask, but since we're talking about it, how should I configure the DNS page to use DoH? In this scenario, let's assume AGH is disabled. When asked to pick a server for DoH under Encrypted DNS, I don't see the servers we were discussing before. I'm not familiar with any of the ones on the list. Can I manually add one for the router to use?

You're in the right place. Search for your preferred, direct (ie: non-AGH related) DOH provider:

Highly related to both topics:

I can send/post a properly configured quad9-doh-ip4-port443-filter-pri for DOH if you'd like. See the aformentioned thread. It incorporates those security/privacy tweaks.

... but really, you should make a back up first. Jump into LuCI -> System -> Backup / Flash Firmware -> Backup

Huh. I came on the forum tonight looking for a solution to very similar symptoms, though apparently I haven't gone as far down the rabbit hole as you.

In my case, my AXT1800 was working fine tethered to my cell phone's hotspot when I had a different provider (Mint aka T-mobile). Switched to AT&T; much better coverage in my area, but the travel router can't reliably connect to the phone hotspot any more. Or more precisely, it can, but I get about 5-10 seconds of connectivity, after which I get that annoying message about being connected to the device, but no internet.

Tried turning off AGH, nothing. Rebooted the AXT1800 just to be sure. Still no bueno. Figured, okay, it's not working anyway, I'll reset the dang thing from the web UI.

Took a few tries, beat my head against the keyboard a few times, trying the old 'goodlife' default wifi password, completely forgot about the default key printed on the sticker on the bottom of the device, finally hunted down an ethernet cable and connected that way and set the router up again - then I remembered the stupid default key

Anywho, now, with the router reset and AGH off, it seems to be able to connect to the Pixel7 hotspot again. We'll see how long I last before I got re-enabling AGH

I see you have resolved your issue. The particular line:
Wed Aug 6 14:07:18 2025 daemon.info dnsmasq[9957]: DNS service limited to local subnets would be a clue. The adgaurd most likely sends all dns queries to their dns I would suspect. Anyways, good on recovering!

I still want to understand what caused the problem to begin with. Can you elaborate?

It's not a problem. daemon.info is informational. A DNS service should always be limited in scope to within local subnets for SOHO/travel. That's not necessarily the case in Enterprise deployments.
