Could beryl connect to open networks? any risk in two router setup?

I use GL Inet to access internet from a different country on my work laptop.

I CANNOT turn on wifi on my work laptop, obviously otherwise it will revel my location.
And, I am kinda paranoid about this. So, I use an ethernet cable to connect from GL INET router to laptop
The cable is getting messy, so I want to use a second GL Inet router which can be used to acc ess the vpn connection from the first router, thus replacing ethernet between worklaptop and router with additional router and its wifi connection.

Old:
GLINETRouter <=== Ethernet Cablle ===> Work laptop
New
GLINETRouter<==== Wifi connection ====> GLINET Router <==cable ==> work laptop

Keeping in mind switching on wifi could get me fired, how safe woulld this be? The thought of new router catching a random public open wifi disturbs me, so wannted to check once.
The new router I am introducing would be Beryl with firmware4 updated.

You can set up a VPN client on the first router, and then enable block non-vpn. Set the second router to extender mode and connect to the WiFi of the first router. This can prevent VPN leakage.

Note: You can clear the WiFi connection record of the second router to avoid automatically connecting to other WiFi when the upper network is disconnected.

Thanks!
Found another problem tho: How to power the router?

I was thinking I could connect USB cable out from the laptop.
I have Beryl and Mango.
Would Mango be safer, considering it uses Micro USB? Mango uses old firmware though.

@alen5193 Request you to answer little bit once you get a chance

Both the GL-MT1300 Beryl and Mango can be powered by connecting to a computer using a USB cable.

GL-MT1300 Beryl: Type-C, 5V/3A.
Mango: Micro USB, 5V/2A.

The security of the official firmware versions is of the highest standard, so there is no need to worry about the risk of leakage. And the latest versions of the above two routers are 4.3.25.
