I have attempted to VPN cascade/daisy chain two routers together with ethernet cables, both connecting to a separate Open VPN UDP provider/client. I have always tried each on its own subnet and ensured that the routers are properly configured in terms of DHCP and incoming etherent on the prior router's subnet, etc. In theory, it should work, because I can get most other combos working, but in practice it does not. I can chain VPNs using different software/hardware but I can't get two GL iNet routers to work together.
I have attempted this over multiple model GL iNet routers GL-A1300, brume2, mango routers each on different subnets.
Important to note that I can always get the first router/VPN working, and the second router always makes it as far as having a green light on the VPN client on GUI. But the second never transmits much data, and I can never access the internet behind router #2.
I always have IP masquerading enabled on each router. I have tried disabling it because I know that sometimes multiple NAT can create problems. But I don't think that is it. The complete blocking of connections seems to suggest it's a firewall or other configuration issue.
Do you have any suggestions? I am open to anything, even flashing the router with a different firmware. I have tried nearly every configuration.
No need to ask "what's the point", "why cascade", etc. I bought some mini routers for the fun of it and I want to make it work. Thanks in advance.
