Debugging 2.4 GHz Device Dropouts

Problem with my GL-MT3000

I’ve got a device (Chord Electronics Poly) that has a solid connection via 2.4 GHz when at home. As soon as I take it to my office it connects and then drops the connection after a minute or so.

Chord are buying a GL-MT3000 to test this with to see if it’s their product that has an issue. I think it might be environmental.

How do I get logs or otherwise find out info about the connection and disconnection of this device to see what is going on? I’d love to see a big smoking gun saying “disconnect because of X” and then I can fix it.

So far I’ve gone through various setups using all the different channels and all the different wifi standards in case AC caused an issue and it uses just b/g/n at the moment. Nothing changes sadly.

Has anyone had a chance to think about this? I’d love some help if possible.

Why does my 2.4 GHz device connect and drop off in certain environments.

At home and at another location it is fine, but in my office the problem happens.

Check the logs on the Routers UI to see what’s going on. Maybe something useful is written there.

I know enough to look for the devices MAC address in the logs; would it say error or blocked or something to indicate what happened?

I’ve just updated to 4.5.7 firmware because I heard some people say 2.4 GHz is improved, but no luck.

At home and elsewhere all is good, but anywhere in my office building it just won’t work.

We discussed previously that it’s not making the WPA2 connection completely, but I have no idea how to debug this.

Thanks. I also 3D Printed a USB Cover with copper tape all around it, and I also added the copper tape on the tip of the USB Flash Drive. My internet speed increased from almost nothing to 35Mbps (Download) & 15Mbps (Upload). It’s better, but still very far from 300Mbps. The ping is very weird. I’ll try that. The device is a small standalone audio player so I can place it anywhere and make sure there is no USB device anywhere near it and that it is not plugged into any USB device itself.

Okay, new developments. I’m assuming the difference is the update to firmware 4.5.7.

First the audio player now connects fine, but then after a short period it disconnects. Looking at the logs compared to last time and it connects correctly. The disconnect is the device choosing to disconnect according to my ChatGPT analysis.

I was able to find a printer and a phone that both have 2.4GHz capabilities. Both also fail with the same issue. Unlike the audio device they have a screen so can give me an error result. They both said password problem.

The phone has connected to the Beryl before and so the password is fine. The printer is new to Beryl and we typed in the password three times and double-triple checked it. Again it connects then disconnected saying password error.

This is a new development and makes me think it’s the Beryl’s 2.4GHz function that’s failing now.

Is there a known issue with this?

Using WPA2 + WPA3?
If that’s the case, reduce to WPA2 only.

Sometimes it can also be the cipher being used, when these devices uses wpa2 and you used wpa2/wpa3 mixed then the chance is that it doesn’t work, or its only working with the opposite cipher.

Note when you change it, i recommend to also reconfigure these devices by deleting their known wifi settings because i do know if you change these ciphers these devices can keep stuck on a eapol key or handshake key which does not exist.

Some devices especially a little older ones can be a bit misbehaving on cipher changes, so if something changed in a update (often should not be the problem) this could be a possibility.

Well, Wi-Fi is a shared medium. Office buildings like co working spaces might create interferences.

This ended up solving it. I turned of WiFi AX and completely reconfigured everything including passwords, SSID on client and Beryl and now it all works.
