Difference between VPN Server and VPN client

Thanks for your feedback! good to know that I am not the only one XD

My current setup is: on one side, I have a AX1800 Flint at home running as wireguard server and I have a Beryl with me acting as a wireguard client.
In addition to this and for backup purpose, I setup a wireguard server at a relative’s house in my country home with a second Beryl and I also got a MT300N-V2 (Mango) just in case of failure of the first Beryl.

Concerning the commercial Open VPN, which one are you using? I recently got Mullvad and configured Beryl client with the Mullvad wireguard config files of my country home servers. However, I have not tested with company vpn (Cisco) as I prefer to be cautious and keep using the current setup.

I use PIA VPN.
Also when Im on the road literally driving and “working” I stop every once in a while to check my email or attend meetings and in those situation more often than not there is no wifi available and use my cellphone (US number At&t) and tether to the Beryl using wiregaurd, but its been a few months now that my speeds are reidculusly slow, like .05-.1 mbps, barely enough to check email and repond and I have no idea why so frustrating. If use my phone by itself as a hotspot with my laptop I can get speeds 50-60 times that not sure If thats an issue for you.
The funny thing is that no matter where I’m in the world if I use my cell phone as a hotspot, my IP address ALWAYS shows up as a US address, I’m assuming where att has servers, so I’ve been very tempted to just use my phone hotspot directly to my work laptop. Im just no sure if my employees could sniff something, even test I ran says my IP and location are in the US, thoughts?

I do not know actually why you are getting so slow speeds with your cell phone when tethering to the Beryl using wireguard. Maybe any experts in the room may give some tips here?

Also, it is a bit weird that your IP address shows up an US IP address when using your cell phone as a hotspot when you are abroad…

One thing that I realized is that when I use my cell phone as a hotspot and with Mullvad app ON, devices connected to this network do NOT use wireguard so I’m always forced to use tether to the Beryl or Mango in order to be sure that all my devices are connected to my wireguard home server.

Yeah its very weird, maybe some experts in telecom here can help.
And this is without using any kind of VPN, just straight phone service using my att SIM card which uses whatever local cel provider is available.

Checkout the screenshot from my phone, I guarantee you I’m nowhere near Alabama, Im not even in the US right now :grinning:

There is a TTL trick here is some info:

Your provider might be throttling you connection

Even when roaming, the APN gateway for the SIM card is still with AT&T U.S. not with the local wireless provider. I get the same thing when traveling.

I do not work for and I am not directly associated with GL.iNet

Rule # 5: Your cell carrier always knows where you are and depending how you pay your bill who you are

I was using a roaming SIM card before. And the IP I got is from another country. So it is not surprising.

Hi everyone … could anyone kindly show me in steps how to set up Server VPN and Client VPN … thank you in advance.

It depends on whether your GL.iNet router model is running Firmware 3 or Firmware 4:

I do not work for and I do not have formal association with GL.iNet

Thank you so much wcs2228, I’m currently running firmware 4.
I will follow the instructions and hopefully it will work.

I have a Gl.inet X3000 router.
I need to manually setup a vpn to change my geo location when using my television, computer and smart phone.
Do I need to setup a vpn client or a vpn server to achieve this?

You will need to use a VPN client on your router, see WireGuard Client - GL.iNet Router Docs 4
